Football: Zaha earns Palace a point at home to West Ham

LONDON (REUTERS) - Wilfried Zaha's deflected goal earned Crystal Palace a 1-1 draw at home to fellow Londoners West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday (Feb 9).
It had looked as though Mark Noble's 27th-minute penalty and Palace's profligacy in front of goal would condemn Palace to a damaging loss in their bid to climb away from the relegation dogfight.
But Zaha eventually beat West Ham's keeper Lucasz Fabianski with a shot that looped up off the boot of Issa Diop.
West Ham had been the better side before the break with Noble calmly putting them ahead from the spot after Palace keeper Vincente Guita hauled down Michail Antonio.
Palace, who began the day four points and four places above the bottom three, were much improved in the second half and created numerous chances to equalise.
Substitute Michy Batshuayi should have scored before James McArthur struck the post with only Fabianski to beat.
Zaha's persistence paid off in the 76th minute and he could have won it for Palace late on.
"I am frustrated as it was such a good performance. The first half I thought was even, but in the second half it was pretty much one-way traffic," manager Roy Hodgson said.
"We had to work hard for our equaliser, we had 17 attempts in the second half, we swarmed around the goal but we found Fabianski in very good form."
Palace actually ended the day one point closer to the drop zone.
"I'm not concerned about what is going on below us, if we keep doing our bit and with performances like today we will get points off our own backs," Hodgson said.
"We know we are good enough to stay out of it."
The draw left Palace with 27 points from 26 games, three points above the relegation zone while West Ham, in 10th place, have now gone five games without a win all competitions.
West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini thought a draw was a fair result.
"They were a bit lucky with the goal but they had other chances so the draw was the logical result," he said.

Football: Interim Lions coach Nazri Nasir relishes clash with Malaysia in AirMarine Cup

SINGAPORE - Having been given the honour to coach the national football team, Nazri Nasir could not have asked for a more difficult opponent for his debut, one that could turn his dream job into a nightmare.
Facing arch-rivals Malaysia on Wednesday (March 20) in the AirMarine Cup at the Bukit Jalil Stadium, the former national captain is embracing the stress and strain of the fixture though.
"The pressure is like a pleasure," he told The Straits Times on Tuesday from Kuala Lumpur, sounding cheerful. "I am taking this game positively. I see it as a challenge and hope this can rub off on the players."
On March 7, the Football Association of Singapore announced Nazri as the caretaker coach, leading the Lions for this week's AirMarine Cup quadrangular, the team's first outing since Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup in November 2018.
Singapore will meet Malaysia on Wednesday while Oman play Afghanistan on the same day.
The winners will contest the final on Saturday while the losers will play in the third-place play-off.
Since then, the 48-year-old coach managed to train the squad only twice. The first, a 90-minute session on Monday, focused on small-sided games and finishing.
The second, a one-hour session, was conducted on Tuesday evening to home in on tactics.
Apart from goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam, who is nursing a calf strain, the rest of the 22-strong squad have no injury problems.
The Lions are currently ranked 165th in the world by global football governing body Fifa while Malaysia are two rungs below.
But at the Suzuki Cup in 2018, it was the Tigers who performed better, reaching the final before losing 3-2 to Vietnam while the Lions crashed out at the group stage.
Tigers coach Tan Cheng Hoe told Malaysian media: "Their (the Malaysian players') spirits are high - that's good, but I want to make sure they adapt to the way we play.
"It is different from their clubs. Training sessions have been different for them, but they've adjusted.
"Playing against Singapore is not going to be easy. I've told the boys not to be emotional but just concentrate on the game."
And even though Malaysia have the home advantage and better recent form, Nazri can sense the determination coursing through the Singapore team ahead of the Causeway derby.
He said: "Even from one training session, I can see all players are eager to go. Guys like (Khairul) Amri, (Khairul) Nizam, Yasir (Hanapi), Gabriel (Quak) and Faris (Ramli) all looked very sharp. All players are hungry to be in the first XI.
"We are not going to sit and wait for Malaysia to attack us. We will pressure them from the start. Chances are very few at international games but when they appear, I want the players to be focused and take these chances.
"We are not expecting a draw. Malaysia will be a very tough opponent, this is a very big rivalry and both sides want to win. But I trust my players to deliver."

Football: Young Lions beaten, but not discouraged, after SPL loss to Home United

SINGAPORE - They gave as good as they got, but the Young Lions fell short as they lost 2-1 to Home United at the Bishan Stadium on Saturday (April 6).
Coach Fandi Ahmad said he was satisfied by another gallant display by his youngsters against a side tipped to challenge for the Singapore Premier League (SPL) title, and felt they deserved at least a point.
"I'm happy with the commitment, discipline, and how the boys tried very hard till the end," he said. "Home settled down and did very well to control the game with their experienced players, but both sides had chances and we should not have lost."
Home skipper Izzdin Shafiq put his side in the front after just six minutes with a fine curling effort from outside the box.
But the strike was cancelled out by Young Lions captain Joshua Pereira, who rose at the back post to send a thumping header beyond goalkeeper Nazri Sabri.
Home restored their lead five minutes before half-time, however, when Australian striker Ollie Puflett's cutback found Adam Swandi, who scored from close range.
Fandi said he felt Puflett was offside: "Our defender needed to follow (Puflett) even though he was offside. Sometimes our boys make the mistake of waiting for the linesman to flag or referee to blow, so it's very frustrating."
Where previous Young Lions sides might have crumbled from conceding a morale-sapping goal just before the break, Fandi's charges kept plugging away.
They went close twice late in the game. First, left wingback Nur Luqman dribbled past two defenders only to fire into the side netting. Then, forward Haiqal Pashia saw his shot from distance go inches wide, with Nazri stranded.
Home could have added a bit of gloss to their win, but Aqhari Abdullah saw his shot come off the upright after he was played through on goal by South Korean teammate Song Ui-Yong.
Fandi said the challenge for him and his coaching team was to keep his charges' level of performance up. He added: "We have told (the players) that whether the result comes or not, does not matter, and the main thing is to maintain the playing style, standard and intensity.
"We want to see it game-in, game-out, and we have been consistent since (last month's AFC Under-23 Championships qualifiers where Singapore finished second in a group comprising North Korea, Hong Kong and Mongolia).
"But we are still making one or two little mistakes and they cannot happen all the time, because some teams will punish you."
For Home, the win was their third in seven days. They had beaten Warriors FC 3-0 in the SPL last Saturday and then Laotian domestic champions Lao Toyota 1-0 in the AFC Cup on Tuesday.
Coach Saswadimata Dasuki said: "We had a difficult time earlier in the season (with consecutive heavy losses to Tampines Rovers in the SPL and Philippine side Kaya FC in the AFC Cup) but the team kept believing."
In Saturday's other game, two late goals helped Albirex Niigata beat Balestier Khalsa 2-1 at the Jurong East Stadium, for the defending champions' first win of the season after four games.

Football: Red Devils enjoying freedom to attack

LONDON • Paul Pogba aimed a thinly veiled dig at Jose Mourinho by claiming that he and his Manchester United teammates are playing in the way that they want to since the Portuguese was replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The France midfielder, who was dropped after a series of run-ins with Mourinho, has scored four times, including a brace in the 4-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday, in the three Premier League games under Solskjaer.
The World Cup winner suggested that the interim appointment had given the United squad a new lease of life, claiming the players were playing in an attacking way that they enjoy, which was not the case under the Portuguese.
"It's different," the 25-year-old Pogba, who became the first United player to score at least twice in consecutive league games since Wayne Rooney in 2012, said.
"We still won some games with the old manager, it's just a different style of play. We are more offensive, we create more chances and play higher.
"This is how we want to play, we want to attack. The manager wants to attack. And that's what we are doing on the pitch."

It took less than four minutes for Old Trafford to be sure that the Solskjaer honeymoon was still in full swing. Marcus Rashford took the ball out near the touchline and there was seemingly nowhere for him to go with his back to goal.
But he, too, is revitalised. For his first trick, he turned sharply, slipping the ball one side of Nathan Ake and running around the other; for his second, pulling off an "elastico" that Ronaldinho would have been proud of to dart past a flummoxed Diego Rico.
Freed to play as a No. 10, Pogba was waiting to meet Rashford's low cross with a sliding finish.
It was the second time in three games that United had scored in the first five minutes; they had managed it just twice in the previous 25. The handbrake is off.
Bournemouth had a back five hoping to keep things tight, but they had no answer to the dominant hosts' swashbuckling style, going two down in 33 minutes after Pogba equalled his best tally of nine in one season for the club.
Rashford made it three before Ake pulled one back for the Cherries in first-half added time.
Pogba also felt the Red Devils have rediscovered their ambition and a winning mentality after beating Cardiff, Huddersfield and Bournemouth during Solskjaer's brief time in charge.
He said: "It was a great performance as well so we're coming back. There is still a long way to go, but to finish the year like that is beautiful.
"Maybe we have just realised that we are Manchester United and we need to be at the top of the league. You've seen the reaction of the players. Everyone is enjoying themselves and that's what we need."
He was denied his hat-trick by Asmir Begovic's fingertips before substitute Romelu Lukaku netted United's fourth, while Eric Bailly was sent off for senselessly scything down Ryan Fraser for the only blemish of the game.
Solskjaer was delighted with the £89 million (S$154.1 million) club-record signing's display and challenged Pogba to maintain his consistency ahead of tomorrow's league trip to Newcastle.
"That is a top performance from a midfielder because it's all-round, it's work rate, it's dangerous," the United caretaker manager said.
"He plays the efficient game and Paul knows he's at his best when he plays that game.
"It is the same I have said to all the players - we want to see the best out of them, enjoying themselves, expressing themselves, within the framework of how we want to see the team play. All of them have really performed up to top standards."

Best individual goal

ANDROS TOWNSEND
"A scorer of great goals, not a great goal scorer," according to Roy Hodgson. Townsend proved his manager right with a 26m, 109kmh volley that flew into the Manchester City net.

Biggest shock

MANCHESTER CITY 2 CRYSTAL PALACE 3
City had a 100 per cent home record and had gone 52 games without losing to anyone outside the big six. Palace had a solitary point from their previous six away games. So, with perverse inevitability, Palace won, and deservedly so.

Best game

ARSENAL 4 TOTTENHAM 2
A game that had it all: Penalties and a red card, controversy and a comeback, a broader narrative and plenty of drama on the day. Perhaps Arsenal's best display under Unai Emery and it brought a terrific result.

Best signing

LUCAS TORREIRA
No matter how many times various people said that Arsenal needed a defensive midfielder, it was never any less true. When Torreira belatedly arrived, he showed what Arsenal had been missing. He brought plenty of bite, a couple of useful goals and the capacity to make Granit Xhaka play better.

Best team goal

AARON RAMSEY
The finish, a back-heel flick against Fulham, was pretty special, but a remarkably quick counter-attack to go from the edge of the Arsenal box made it even better. Hector Bellerin, Alexandre Lacazette, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ramsey (three times) were all involved.

Most improved

MOUSSA SISSOKO
After two seasons in London, he looked a waste of £30 million (S$52 million) of Tottenham's money. Now the powerful Frenchman has become their most reliable midfielder and their fans are singing, "Who needs Bale when you've got Sissoko?" What a turnaround.

‘Best of the rest’ team

4-4-2
Ben Foster (Watford) Matt Doherty (Wolves) Federico Fernandez (Newcastle) Issa Diop (West Ham) Ben Chilwell (Leicester) Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth) Andre Gomes (Everton) Ruben Neves (Wolves) Felipe Anderson (West Ham) Callum Wilson (Bournemouth) Richarlison (Everton)
Substitutes: Alex McCarthy (Southampton) Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Crystal Palace) Philip Billing (Huddersfield) James Maddison (Leicester) David Brooks (Bournemouth) Roberto Pereyra (Watford) Glenn Murray (Brighton)

Best player

VIRGIL VAN DIJK
Defenders don't tend to win the individual awards, but perhaps they should. Van Dijk has been a colossus at the back, transforming Liverpool into a frugal side and forming a superb partnership with Joe Gomez.

Best manager

JURGEN KLOPP
And not merely because Liverpool are six points ahead in a league most expected City to win. Klopp has enacted change. Liverpool are not always as fast and frenetic, but they are better defensively, more consistent and more tactically flexible. The fact they have not dropped points to any of the bottom 15 is remarkable.

Best understudy

BERNARDO SILVA
But for Mohamed Salah, Kevin de Bruyne would have been named Footballer of the Year last season. Until their December relapse, Manchester City barely missed the brilliant, but injured, Belgian. It is a sign of the class and creativity of Bernardo Silva, but also of his reliability and defensive discipline.

Biggest letdown

ALEXIS SANCHEZ
Even after the Chilean's slow start at Old Trafford, there was a theory this could have been his season. He had a rare summer off and a fine pre-season. Yet, since then, he has mustered a solitary league goal, been dropped and injured. It is hard to see the league's best-paid player getting into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's strongest side.

Worst manager

JOSE MOURINHO
With a dishonourable mention of Mark Hughes, another who moaned better than he managed, it is Mourinho. He was sacked after failing to get the best from his players, criticising them relentlessly, presiding over poor football and even, unlike his teams, failing to defend properly. He left Manchester United 11 points behind the top four, and with the biggest wage bill.

Worst showing

KENEDY
The Brazilian borrowed from Chelsea helped keep Newcastle up last season. But at Cardiff in August, he had a shocker. He was the first player since 2010 to complete the first half of a Premier League match without making a pass. Then he cost his side victory by missing a penalty.

Worst signing

ANDRE-FRANK ZAMBO ANGUISSA
Fulham spent £100 million (S$173 million) and are 19th. If much of the focus has been on the much-vaunted Jean-Michael Seri, it is worth noting that his midfield sidekick Anguissa cost still more. A £30 million defensive midfielder has failed to protect the defence. Centre-back Calum Chambers has looked a better option in midfield.

Worst signing

GLENN MURRAY
Murray is a stalwart of the lower leagues who turned 35 in September. His career should be winding down. Instead, the inelegant Brighton striker has been rubbing shoulders with Sergio Aguero and Anthony Martial in the scorers' chart.

Pep hungry for more

Pep hungry for more

LONDON • Pep Guardiola hailed Manchester City's feat of claiming the first domestic treble in English football as a bigger achievement than winning the Champions League, after an emphatic 6-0 thrashing of Watford at Wembley in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus each scored twice, while David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne netted to cap a glorious campaign with the biggest margin of victory in an FA Cup final since 1903.
City also retained the League Cup in February for a clean sweep of domestic silverware, but again missed out on a maiden Champions League trophy as Tottenham edged their quarter-final tie 4-4 on away goals last month.
Winning the European Cup for the first time in the club's history remains the holy grail for Guardiola, but he believes his side have raised the bar in England for performing week in, week out.
The City manager said: "It means being consistent every three days during 10 months. I love the Champions League, but doing that (the treble) is more difficult than winning the Champions League.
"This is one of the best seasons I've experienced as a manager. We know each other better and the standards we need. We should come back after summer, try to be fit and we'll see."
But, despite his 27th trophy as a coach and his sixth since arriving at the Etihad in 2016, he remains hungry for his side to improve even further next season.

PEERLESS
This may have been a victory lap completed with embarrassing ease, with early Watford body blows parried in comfort before a form of footballing torture ensued, but this was arguably the greatest day in City's history as this treble was won ruthlessly, spectacularly.
PHIL MCNULTY, BBC Sport's chief football writer, on City's drubbing of Watford in the FA Cup final.

CLOSE TO PERFECTION
Welcome to the new order. Domestic games: played 51, won 43. Domestic trophies: three out of three. Five-goal hauls: 11. Defeats since Christmas: one... It turns out we really do all live in a sky blue world now.
'' BARNEY RONAY, The Guardian's senior sports writer on City's dominance of English football despite a stiff challenge from Liverpool in the league.

Guardiola, who was seen coaching Sterling in the aftermath of their Wembley victory, told BT Sport that "Liverpool show us how tough the future will be".
He said: "We won the Premier League by one point, so we are not so far away (from the competition) to be relaxed. This is the standards, the level we are going to face."
The Spaniard's unrelenting pursuit of perfection is why Steve McManaman feels "until he gets the Champions League, he'll still feel it's a bit of unfinished business".
Fellow pundit Rio Ferdinand also told BT Sport that with Guardiola at the helm, "the fear for everybody is they could dominate for many years to come".
The former Manchester United defender said: "He's not stupid. Liverpool are close. They mounted a proper competition this year. He knows he can't sit on the beach for too long. He'll be thinking about what to change, what to add.
"That's the scary thing for everybody else, the relentlessness, all trickles down from the manager."
Sterling also gave an insight into the demands Guardiola puts on the City players, saying: "I've been on holiday and (he's) made me think it's gonna be another tough season. Just keep improving myself, week in and week out."
While Guardiola will now go on a break before preparing for next term, he will not allow his plans to be overshadowed by persistent talk of a possible breach of Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
City have long strongly denied any wrongdoing but, last week, it was suggested that Uefa may impose a one-year ban on their competing in the Champions League, following an investigation.
Asked if he had received any similar extra payments, like the alleged funds that his predecessor Roberto Mancini received to keep within FFP regulations, Guardiola fumed: "Do you know the question you're asking me? Honestly, do you think I deserve to have this type of question, the day we won the treble?
"This club makes a big step forward with the investment. Can you do that without top players? No way. Money helps to buy the incredible players we have, yes.
"But we wait, if we're punished, we accept it. If the opponents and contenders think it's just about the money, it is okay."
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, THE GUARDIAN

Football: Milan crash out of Europa League on goal difference after 3-1 loss to Olympiakos in Athens

(REUTERS) - Olympiakos Piraeus pulled off a stunning 3-1 Europa League win over AC Milan that put them into the last 32 and sent the Italians crashing out as the remaining places in the knockout stage were decided on Thursday (Dec 13).
All the goals in Greece came in a thrilling second half, with Milan defender Cristian Zapata scoring an own goal to make it 2-0 to Olympiakos in the 70th minute, before he pulled one back for his side two minutes later.
Yet Milan's defensive frailty was punished when Konstantinos Fortounis scored from the penalty spot in the 81st minute to give his side the win that left them second in Group F on 10 points.
They edged out the seven-time European champions on goal difference and progressed along with group winners Real Betis.
Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso said his team had nobody to blame but themselves.
"We gifted the game to Olympiakos," he said. "We made fools of ourselves ... We were too naive and allowed Olympiakos to get back into the game. We are very upset because we always make the same mistakes again and again."
Swedish side Malmo pulled off one of the bigger shocks of the round, winning 1-0 away to 10-man Besiktas to finish runners-up behind Genk in Group I.
Besiktas' Ricardo Quaresma was given a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Franz Brorsson in the second half.
Bayer Leverkusen demolished AEK Larnaca 5-1 to finish top of Group A, with FC Zurich finishing runners-up following a 1-1 draw with Ludogorets.
Group C winners Zenit St Petersburg were comfortably beaten 2-0 away by Slavia Prague, who claimed the runners-up spot, rendering Bordeaux's 1-0 win away to FC Copenhagen meaningless as both sides went out.
Celtic, who were beaten 2-1 at home by a Salzburg side that had already secured top spot in Group B, needed a helping hand from Rosenborg.
The Norwegians secured a 1-1 draw at home to RB Leipzig that knocked out the German side and sent the Scottish champions through.
Despite a 3-0 thumping by Sevilla, Krasnodar made it out of Group J as Standard Liege could only manage a scoreless draw away to Turkish side Akhisar.
They will be joined in next Monday's draw for the knockout stage by Villarreal, Rapid Vienna, Dynamo Kiev and Stade Rennais.

Van Gaal's claims seem at odds with the more entertaining football played by United since Solskjaer started a reign that looks set to bring him the manager's job on a permanent basis. "The way Manchester United are playing now is not the way Ferguson played," Van Gaal told the BBC on Tuesday. "It is defensive, counter-attacking football.

"That was not a superb section. However we should fear about ourselves and never Germany. "I don't think we are favourites." The Dutch are, nonetheless, in assured temper after Thursday's win. Football: 'Start playing like Manchester United', pleads Rashford

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Marcus Rashford has called on Manchester United players to "be real with each other" after Manchester City condemned them to a seventh defeat in nine games on Wednesday (April 24).
Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane struck for the visitors in 12 second-half minutes at Old Trafford to seal a 2-0 win over United, who remain three points adrift of the top four.
"Today we didn't play like Manchester United," Rashford told Sky Sports.
"It's not right. The bare minimum is to work hard and give all for the badge, the supporters, the club and yourself.
"It has been a tough road to get to where we are, to get there and not be putting up the same performances as we were in January is disappointing. We know what's been going wrong - it's mentality and willingness to run for your team.
"Forget the league and top four, you don't lose this game. It's that simple as a Manchester United fan. We never call each other out but we have to be real with each other. It's a matter of trying to improve each other.
"It's more getting back used to doing it on the pitch. They (the supporters) know we can do it. Forget the top four and the Champions League. We have to get to the bottom of it and start playing like Manchester United for ourselves."

Football: Neymar to resume training on Wednesday after injury

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar will returning to training on Wednesday for "on-pitch tests" after two-and-a-half months out with a foot injury, the club said on Tuesday (April 2).
The world's most expensive player has been sidelined since hobbling off during a French Cup win over Strasbourg on Jan 23, missing PSG's Champions League last-16 defeat by Manchester United.
"@Neymarjr's recovery from injury is progressing well and he will return to training on Wednesday as scheduled for on-pitch tests," PSG said on Twitter.
"Club specialists will carry out a full medical and radiological assessment in two weeks' time."
PSG were hoping Neymar would be healed enough to get back on the pitch in time for a potential Champions League quarter-final later this month, but the French side suffered a humiliating exit as United sensationally overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
The 27-year-old may be targeting a return for a potential French Cup final on April 27, should PSG get past Nantes in the last four on Wednesday.
Coach Thomas Tuchel said Tuesday that PSG will also be without Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Thomas Meunier against Nantes.

LONDON • Manchester City, branding themselves as "The Fourmidables", celebrated their domestic treble with an open-top bus parade on Monday, drawing an estimated 100,000 fans to the streets of the city centre.
Pep Guardiola's City became the first side to complete a clean sweep of all three major English trophies with last Saturday's 6-0 thrashing of Watford in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
They had clinched a second successive Premier League title the previous week and also won the League Cup in February.
It was the fourth time in seven years the club had taken over the city centre for a celebratory parade.
Adding the Community Shield to the tally, the club showed off their trophies and had banners with the words "The Fourmidables".
The victorious squad were joined by members of the City women's team, who also won an FA Cup and League Cup double this year.
Manager Guardiola insisted he has not thought about next season, but admitted Vincent Kompany will be missed after the captain confirmed his departure to become player-manager at Anderlecht.

SIMPLY GREAT
The moment that ball against Leicester went 'top bins', I knew I was done. I couldn't do anything better. It felt right.
VINCENT KOMPANY, City's captain, who is leaving on a high to become Belgian club Anderlecht's player-manager.

"Zero," the Spaniard said when taking to the stage. "Now is time for good dinners and good wine. We will think about it in one month's time, and enjoy it now.
"I think we will miss Vincent a lot. He is coming back in the future in some way. It is an incredible way to finish the season."
Kompany said he realised the time was right to leave when he scored a stunning winner against Leicester in City's penultimate league match.
The 1-0 win took City to within one more win of the title, which they clinched with a 4-1 victory over Brighton on the last day.
Kompany said: "The moment that ball against Leicester went 'top bins', I knew I was done. I couldn't do anything better. It felt right."
The Belgian now expects the club to go on and achieve even greater success. "This team are ready to achieve so much more," he said.
"I've given everything I could for this club. I can't tell you how proud of that I am. I have nothing left. I have given everything."
He ended his speech by declaring City were the "best club in the world" regardless of European success: "I do not care if you win the Champions League or not, you are the best club in the world."
Organisers said the crowd for the parade, which culminated with the stage show outside Manchester Cathedral, was estimated to be around 100,000.
Before the parade, a video had emerged online of the league trophy being smashed to pieces at City's training ground, as players Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne looked on from a balcony above.
The video indicated that the trophy was dropped but the incident turned out to be just an elaborate prank for City's in-house City TV, as confirmed by Sky Sports.

Football: Thailand axe Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac after Asian Cup horror show in 4-1 loss to India

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Thailand have fired coach Milovan Rajevac following a humiliating 4-1 thrashing by India in their opening Asian Cup football game at the weekend.
The 65-year-old Serb, who took charge of Thailand in 2017, paid the price after the War Elephants conceded three second-half goals to slump to a shock defeat in Abu Dhabi on Sunday (Jan 6).
Thai football chiefs took a dim view of their Group A flop and acted swiftly to remove Rajevac the morning after.
"The result is not what is expected of the Thai national team and that our supporters deserve," Thailand's FA president Somyot Poompanmoung said.
"Like all Thai football fans across the country, I am also disappointed with the result. But as president of the football association, I cannot stand still with this problem."
Former assistant coach Sirisak Yodyardthai will assume control of the team when they face Bahrain on Jan 10 and hosts United Arab Emirates on Jan 14, Thai officials added.
Rajevac, who has had spells in charge of Algeria and Qatar, famously steered Ghana to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup where they were beaten on penalties by Uruguay.
But he was left shell-shocked by Thailand's horror show against underdogs India, whose veteran striker Sunil Chhetri scored twice, overtaking Lionel Messi's 65 international goals in the process.
Lamenting his side's abject display, Rajevac admitted that India were worthy winners.
"They were phenomenal - they ran more, were more aggressive and wanted it more," he said.
"They absolutely deserved to win. But we underperformed, especially in the second half."
Rajevic has been criticised for his defensive style but the Serb clearly felt otherwise after watching Thailand over-run by a hungry India side.
"It's not always about technical ability and skill on the ball," he said. "We lacked power, strength and aggression. We need to put more pressure on the ball and show more passion."
Thailand, appearing for the first time in the Finals since co-hosting the Asian Cup in 2007, have now won just one of 21 games at the continent's showcase competition.
Cricket-mad India find themselves as unlikely leaders of Group A thanks to their first Asian Cup win in 55 years.
The Emiratis were held 1-1 by Bahrain in Saturday's curtain-raiser.

Football: European clubs say they will boycott Fifa's Club World Cup

MIAMI (Reuters) - Europe's top clubs say they will boycott Fifa's proposed new Club World Cup, leaving Fifa president Gianni Infantino's latest plans in serious doubt and risking a major split in the world game.
Infantino had hoped to get backing this week for creating two new, potentially money-spinning, tournaments - a new worldwide Nations League for national teams and a fresh 24-team Club World Cup to start with a "pilot" edition in 2021.
However, even before Friday's meeting of the ruling Fifa Council, he was forced to drop the Nations League plan after his own task force found there was no consensus for such a tournament and a lack of space in the international calendar.
Infantino still wants to move ahead with his plans for a "pilot edition" of a 24-team Club World Cup, with the council expected to allow the idea to move forward ahead of June's Fifa Congress which would be asked to endorse the plan.
But a letter to Uefa and Infantino from the European Club Association (ECA) head Andrea Agnelli, chairman of Italian side Juventus, and signed by 15 members of the organisation's board, including officials of Manchester United, Barcelona and Ajax Amsterdam, made clear the opposition.
The letter, sections of which were published in the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung says they are "firmly against any approval of a revised Club World Cup at this point in time and confirm that no ECA clubs would take part to such a competition".
The ECA represents 232 European clubs, including all the leading teams who would be expected to feature in a Club World Cup.
The ECA says a decision on potential new competitions can only be made as part of an agreed framework for the international match calendar post-2024.
The ECA and Fifa were not immediately available for comment.
The Club World Cup is currently an annual seven-team tournament which attracts minimal interest in Europe - the centre of the football business.
Uefa, European football's governing body, is unlikely to fight Infantino's plans at Friday's council, with the proposal expected to be passed on to a further meeting ahead of June's congress.
But it is hard to see how a 2021 edition could go ahead without the star attractions - Europe's top clubs.
The Fifa Council is also expected to decide to continue exploring plans to expand the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48 teams with the possibility of additional hosting in other countries.
