Football: Man United legends thrash Bayern in 1999 charity rematch
LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tormented Bayern Munich once again as the Manchester United manager scored in his club's 1999 treble winners' reunion on Sunday (May 26).
Twenty years after Solskjaer scored the last-gasp winner that helped Alex Ferguson's side beat Bayern in the Champions League final, the current United boss joined his old team-mates for a charity match against the Germans at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer again started on the bench as he did in the Camp Nou final, but he wasted little time after coming on for Andy Cole, turning home the opener after Dwight Yorke was denied.
With Ferguson back in the dugout as manager for the day, there was a feelgood factor in the air at Old Trafford for United's 5-0 win after a troubled season for the current generation.
It was the first time Ferguson, 77, had managed a United team since his retirement in 2013.
He sat with ex-England boss Steve McClaren, his assistant 20 years ago.
The reunion match, in aid of the Manchester United Foundation, was also the first time Ferguson had been on the pitch since undergoing major surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage last May.
Rolling back the years, David Beckham was firing cross-field balls, Jaap Stam showed no mercy at the back and Paul Scholes bossed the midfield.
Â
Â
They faced a star-studded Bayern squad that included Lothar Matthaus, Stefan Effenberg, Sammy Kuffour and Carsten Jancker from the 1999 starting lineup, as well as former Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis.
Solskjaer went off midway through the first half and skipper Peter Schmeichel followed suit shortly after Dwight Yorke scored a superb second for United Legends.
Thanks to their two late goals against Bayern, United remain the only English club to win a treble made up of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in one season.
As the latest man charged with trying to engineer a return to those glory days he was such an integral part in, Solskjaer's efforts were greeted with enthusiasm by a crowd in excess of 60,000.
Popular as he is, the reception for Solskjaer was eclipsed by the one afforded to Beckham.
The former England skipper, 44, sold to Real Madrid in 2003 after a fall-out with Ferguson, got a standing ovation every time he went to take a corner.
Changes aplenty punctuated the second half rather than goals, with Stam, Scholes and Denis Irwin among those to be replaced to rapturous applause.
Nicky Butt netted United's third of the afternoon 11 minutes from time as he coolly stabbed home a Louis Saha cross.
Saha, one of the handful of non-treble winners playing for United, slotted home the fourth in the 85th minute as he turned home a Jonathan Greening cross.
In a fitting finale, Beckham got behind the Bayern backline and showed quick feet before firing home in front of the Stretford End, leaving Ferguson wreathed in smiles and the crowd on their feet in delight.

Football: Klopp relaxed about Salah's Liverpool drought
LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is relaxed about Mohamed Salah's goalscoring drought, saying the Egyptian forward remains a key part of the title chasers' attacking armoury.
Salah, who scored 44 times in his maiden season at Anfield, has gone eight matches without finding the net but still has 20 goals in 2018/19 and played a pivotal part in the last-gasp winner against Tottenham on Sunday.
"When everybody is talking about 'he didn't score in I don't know how many games', he doesn't seem to be bothered about it. I'm not," Klopp said on Wednesday (April 3).
"For sure we didn't really speak about it. I think if something is clear and obvious you do speak about it. How do you deal with a situation when he scored 40 goals last year?
"His career's not over. It's like if he can score this year 20 goals then he's scored 60 in the last two. Wow, that's not too bad."
Salah's success last season means he has attracted more attention from opponents in the current campaign, often being double-marked.
It has had the effect, though, of benefiting teammates, with Sadio Mane (20 goals) and Roberto Firmino (14) taking on some of the burden.
"Sometimes, you need a bit of time to adapt to the new situations and I don't think he really needed that," said Klopp on Salah's overall value to the side and how he has coped with the close attention.
"He's a threat. He helps us a lot. He deals with all the new situations for him really well.
"If you have only one (goalscorer), you think maybe you rely a bit too much on that. This year we don't rely on Mo's goals, but he's still in a very good position in comparison to all the other players.
"Seventeen (league) goals is a good number, and there are still a lot of games to come. But it was never a problem. We have 79 points - you cannot have that with a lot of problems over the year."
Liverpool travel to Southampton on Friday and Klopp reported a clean bill of health after a minor injury worry over defender Virgil van Dijk following the win over Tottenham.

Football: Arsenal thump BATE to reach Europa League last 16
PARIS (AFP) - Arsenal reached the last 16 of the Europa League by comfortably seeing off BATE Borisov 3-0 on Thursday (Feb 21) and overturning a first-leg deficit that had threatened one of the tournament favourites with elimination.
BATE came into the clash at the Emirates with hopes of an upset after beating Arsenal 1-0 in Belarus last week, but the hosts were level on aggregate after just three minutes when Zakhar Volkov sliced Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's low cross past Denis Scherbitski in his own goal.
Unai Emery's side poured forward and put themselves deservedly ahead in the tie when Shkodran Mustafi thumped home a header six minutes before the break.
Maksim Skavysh missed a good chance to put BATE ahead on away goals when Arsenal failed to clear three minutes after the restart, but another powerful header, this time from Sokratis on the hour mark, put the Gunners into Friday's draw.
Arsenal will be joined by another of the tournament favourites in Napoli after Carlo Ancelotti's team breezed to a 2-0 win over FC Zurich that saw them win 5-1 on aggregate.
Adam Ounas starred on the night for the Serie A outfit after laying on Simone Verdi's 43rd-minute opener before scoring the hosts' second with 15 minutes left.
RB Salzburg, Dinamo Zagreb and Zenit Saint Petersburg all also overturned first-leg deficits, with Austrians Salzburg hammering Club Brugge 4-0 to go through 5-2 and Croatian champions Dinamo 4-2 winners on aggregate after a storming 3-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen.
Zenit, meanwhile, overcame Fenerbahce 3-1 in Russia, Magomed Ozdoev and Sardar Azmoun giving the hosts an aggregate lead before Mehmet Topal put the Turks ahead on away goals just before the break.
However, Azmoun struck again 14 minutes from the end to see Sergei Semak's side through to the last 16.
Pablo Fornals snuck Villarreal past Sporting Lisbon with a fine curling strike that gave the La Liga side a 1-1 draw on the night and a 2-1 win overall.
Scotland's participation in Europe ended on Thursday after 10-man Celtic fell 1-0 at Valencia, already 2-0 up from the first leg in Glasgow and winners in Spain thanks to Kevin Gameiro's 70th-minute strike.
Eintracht Frankfurt swept past Shakhtar Donetsk with a pulsating 4-1 win over the Ukrainians that gave the Bundesliga side a 6-3 aggregate victory.
Sevilla cruised into the next round 3-0 on aggregate on Wednesday after a 2-0 win over Lazio that saw Wissam Ben Yedder score his second goal of the tie after 20 minutes before Pablo Sarabia lashed home Jesus Navas' pass with 12 minutes to play.
Later on Thursday, Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea look to put recent turmoil behind them when they host Malmo with a 2-1 first-leg lead, while inconsistent Inter Milan look to hold their single-goal advantage over Rapid Vienna at the San Siro.

PARIS (REUTERS) - Edinson Cavani is a major doubt for Paris St Germain's Champions League clash with Manchester United after picking up a thigh injury in his team's 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Girondins de Bordeaux on Saturday (Feb 9).
The Uruguay striker left the pitch on the stroke of halftime holding his thigh, soon after scoring with a penalty in the 42nd minute.
The French champions will be missing Brazil forward Neymar, who has been ruled out with a foot injury, for the last-16 first-leg clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
"I honestly don't know if Cavani will play. Yes it is worrying. We don't have another Edi like we don't have another Neymar," said PSG coach Thomas Tuchel.
Italian midfielder Marco Verratti is also doubtful due to injury.
"There are a lot of plans B. Without Ney, maybe without Marco, maybe without Edi. We have a plan D," German Tuchel said.
"It's super difficult. If we miss several players the challenge will be even bigger. But we will be ready on Tuesday."

VALENCIA • It was not a Wednesday evening that Jose Mourinho, Phil Jones or Paul Pogba will remember fondly.
Manchester United had the chance to win their Champions League group, but they failed.
Pogba had the opportunity to prove his worth to Mourinho, but he failed. The less said about Jones, the better.
The Red Devils had qualified for the round of 16 before they set foot in Spain but, with Juventus falling to a surprise 2-1 defeat away to Young Boys, victory in Valencia would have been enough for United to seal top spot in Group H.
But they were beaten 2-1, a result owing to their miserable performance and a dispirited Mourinho said after the match that "nothing surprised" him.
"I didn't learn anything at all," the United manager said of his players, after he fielded a line-up that included eight changes and a return for Pogba, who delivered a sluggish display at the Mestalla.
"Nothing surprised me at all... I expect more from my players, especially players that week in, week out, they (the media) ask why they don't play, why they don't start. It was a good match to play, without any kind of pressure, in a competition everyone likes to play in.
"And, in the end, my team improved (only) when I made changes I didn't want to make, which is frustrating because I didn't want to play the three players that I played in the second half.
"Before the game, I told the players, if we win tonight and Juventus win, we did our job; if we don't win and Juventus doesn't win, we can blame ourselves."
Marcus Rashford, who scored United's goal, Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young were all introduced in the second half.
Finishing first in the group would have earned them a relatively easier tie against one of Atletico Madrid, Roma, Schalke, Ajax and Lyon when the last-16 draw takes place on Monday. They would also avoid the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
Despite his disappointment, Mourinho insisted that qualification was what really mattered.
"I think to qualify in this group is a success, never a failure. To finish second in this group is always a success," the Portuguese added.
"Apart from a couple of clubs that are clearly much better than the others, I don't think the (last-16) draw will be significantly different."
Jones scored an own goal just after the break to double Valencia's lead after Carlos Soler had put the home side ahead in the 17th minute.
Rashford gave United hope with an 87th-minute header but it proved too little, too late.
Mourinho explained that injuries forced him to make eight changes to the team that beat Fulham on Saturday. Only David de Gea and Nemanja Matic were rested.

Football: Salah fires Liverpool seven points clear, Arsenal rock Chelsea
LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League as Mohamed Salah's double inspired a dramatic 4-3 victory over Crystal Palace, while Arsenal ignited their top-four bid by beating Chelsea on Saturday (Jan 19).
With second-placed Manchester City travelling to bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield on Sunday, Liverpool seized the chance to tighten their grip on the title race.
Jurgen Klopp's side were pushed hard by Palace but Salah's predatory instincts and a woeful mistake from Eagles goalkeeper Julian Speroni ensured Liverpool improved their unbeaten home league run to 32 games.
"He's world class, simply world class," Klopp said of Salah.
Liverpool's haul of 60 points from 23 matches tops the Reds' previous best tally of 59, set at the same stage of the 1893-94 and 1987-88 campaigns.
"We had to stay positive, being one down is not a massive blow. We just needed to win the second half," Klopp said.
"We have 60 points now. It's crazy."
Palace, the last team to beat Liverpool in a Premier League game at Anfield, in April 2017, took a shock 34th-minute lead.
Wilfried Zaha picked out Andros Townsend, who drilled a crisp finish past Alisson Becker.
Salah equalised 60 seconds after the interval, the Egypt forward slotting in his 18th goal of the season after Virgil van Dijk's shot deflected into his path.
Liverpool went ahead in the 53rd minute when Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino, surrounded by defenders, still managed to unload a shot that deflected in off Palace's Cheikhou Kouyate.
James Tomkins out-jumped Fabinho to head Palace level in the 65th minute, yet Liverpool were gifted the crucial third 10 minutes later thanks to a howler from Speroni.
James Milner's cross prompted a nervous flap from Speroni, who tipped the ball high over his own head and Salah was on hand to convert on the line.
Milner was sent off in the 89th minute for a second booking, but Liverpool made it four in stoppage-time through Sadio Mane before Max Meyer capped a frantic finale with Palace's third.
At the Emirates Stadium, fifth-placed Arsenal closed the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea to three points in the race to qualify for the Champions League with a 2-0 win.
Unai Emery's team had lost three of their last six league games, sparking the first criticism of their Spanish manager.
But they tore into London rivals Chelsea, opening the scoring in the 14th minute.
Hector Bellerin's cross found Alexandre Lacazette and the French striker took a touch before smashing a sublime strike past Kepa Arrizabalaga from a tight angle.
The Gunners increased their lead in the 38th minute when Laurent Koscielny mistimed his attempted header, only to see the ball bounce off his shoulder and loop into the net.
Arsenal's Hector Bellerin was stretchered off in the second half, but spluttering Chelsea have now won only two of their last five matches.
"It was a big result. We wanted to do a special moment in this derby. Chelsea were six points ahead, so it helps us. We can be optimistic," Emery said.
Manchester United beat Brighton 2-1 to make it seven successive wins since interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced the sacked Jose Mourinho.
Solskjaer's sixth-placed side took the lead in the 27th minute at Old Trafford when Gaetan Bong conceded a penalty with a foul on Paul Pogba and the France midfielder stroked home the spot-kick.
Pogba's "rocking the baby" celebration was to mark him becoming a father for the first time, with his girlfriend Maria Salaues believed to have given birth this week.
United winger Marcus Rashford marked his 150th game for the club with his side's second goal in the 42nd minute, with Pascal Gross reducing the deficit in the 72nd minute.
Solskjaer, the first United boss to win his first six league games, said: "I can't complain can I? I am smiling and this is one of these things I will remember for the rest of my life."
Newcastle climbed out of the relegation zone with a 3-0 win over Cardiff at St James' Park that saw their opponents drop into the bottom three.
Southampton boosted their bid to avoid relegation with a 2-1 victory against Everton at St Mary's.
Diogo Jota's hat-trick piled pressure on Leicester manager Claude Puel as the Wolves midfielder's last-gasp strike secured a 4-3 win.
Bournemouth beat West Ham 2-0 with goals from Callum Wilson and Josh King, while Watford drew 0-0 against Burnley.
PSG take charge with 2-0 win at Manchester United, Paul Pogba sent off Kylian Mbappe and Presnel Kimpembe scored with assists from Angel Di Maria as Paris St Germain beat Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford.

EPL clubs opposed to European changes
EPL clubs opposed to European changes
LONDON • Premier League clubs have come out fighting in the face of sweeping proposals to change the Champions League format, insisting they will "vigorously defend" the domestic game.
The 20 teams issued a statement after a meeting in London on Friday when they were told of moves by the European Clubs' Association (ECA) to significantly expand the number of European matches, and replace the system where the top four English teams qualify for the Champions League.
The chairmen were told that the threats to the league were two-fold. Firstly, changes to the calendar from 2024 could see the slots available for domestic games cut and those for Europe increased.
Secondly, changing the Champions League to four groups of eight teams, with promotion and relegation rather than teams qualifying from domestic leagues, would negatively impact on the race for the top four, one of the driving forces of fan interest.
The statement read: "All clubs unanimously agreed it is inappropriate for European football bodies to create plans that would alter the structures, calendar and competitiveness of the domestic game and will work together to protect the Premier League."
The extra matches - from six to 14 - would require a radical shake-up of the club calendar. But the clubs have been told that it is a real possibility - the calendar for after 2024 is being determined by the ECA along with Uefa and Fifa.
While legal action is a possibility if the fixture calendar is affected, they also have support from the European Leagues organisation. Lars-Christer Olsson, its president, said: "Our main objective is to safeguard domestic competitions."
THE TIMES, LONDON
However, in a statement published on their official website, the Premier League did not shy away from condemning such changes. They wrote: " The Premier League and our clubs today unanimously reaffirmed our strong opposition to the proposed reform of UEFA club competitions from 2024, which would alter the structure, calendar and competitiveness of league football.

New head of coach education for FAS
New head of coach education for FAS
Former national cerebral palsy football team head coach Zainudeen Hassan, 50, has been appointed the new head of coach education and development of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), it was announced yesterday.
He replaces Basir Ellaya Kutty, who left the post in June last year.
Zainudeen's responsibilities include working closely with coaches from Singapore Premier League (SPL) clubs and their centre of excellence youth programmes, as well as implementing the FAS coach education syllabus.
"Coach education and development is an important part of football," he said in a statement.
"Not only does it ensure that our coaches are kept updated with the ever-changing game of football, it also aligns them in achieving the desired outcomes of our football development plans."
A former coach at the now-defunct Milo Soccer School, Zainudeen was also head of youth development for SPL club Balestier Khalsa from 2000 to 2009. He also guided the cerebral palsy team to a silver at the 2014 Asean Para Games and a bronze at the 2015 Games.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "Zainudeen has been actively involved in Singapore football and has a good understanding of regional football and its trends, through his roles in the AFC and the Asean Football Federation.
"Coach education and development is a key part of FAS' strategic plan and, with Zainudeen's experience and understanding of the local and regional football coaching systems, we believe he would be able to further guide and support our coaches."

Giroud eyes Platini's record after scoring again for Les Bleus
PARIS • As a striker, Olivier Giroud has always been a polarising figure with his profligacy in front of goal.
However, his unselfish play and hold-up ability have always been treasured at both club and international levels.
While his value has fallen at Chelsea, having started only six Premier League games this season, he remains one of the first names on Didier Deschamps' team sheet.
On Monday, he showed why the France coach continues to keep faith in him as he "brings something different to the other two strikers".
Giroud put his club frustrations behind him after his second goal in his second competitive game saw him reach an international milestone, cementing his place among his country's greats.
France hammered Iceland 4-0 at the Stade de France, with forwards Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann and defender Samuel Umtiti also among the scorers. The world champions stayed top of Group H in the Euro 2020 qualifiers, ahead of Turkey on goal difference.
But it was Giroud who earned all the plaudits after notching his 35th goal from 89 international caps to move to third place on the list of France's all-time top scorers, one goal ahead of David Trezeguet.
Only Thierry Henry (51) and Michel Platini (41) have scored more than the 32-year-old, something Deschamps feels "must be a source of great pride for him".
He said: "He arrived with us having not played a lot with his club, even if he has been super efficient in the Europa League (he has nine goals in as many games this term).
"With us, he scored twice in two games. He remains effective and he is playing according to his style."
His opposite number Erik Hamren agreed, claiming Giroud "was a really important player for them the way they play".
The Iceland coach said: "You could see that today, how they use him, he's a really good player for France the way they use him."
And Giroud, whose Blues' contract expires in the summer, has no plans to relinquish his position as France's target man, even as rumours swirl around his possible return to Ligue 1 with Lyon.
Telling website Tribal Football he had an eye on overtaking Platini's mark, he said: "Yes it's (an) objective. I always said that the important thing for me was the collective. But it is true that, personally, I hope to beat this record."

Football: Ajax do not fear anyone as they eye Tottenham's scalp to reach Champions League final
LONDON (AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE) - Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana says that the flamboyant European dreamers aren't afraid of anyone as they prepare to continue their wild ride in the Champions League with the first leg of their semi-final at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday (April 30).
Four-time European champions Ajax are hunting their first major continental triumph since Patrick Kluivert downed AC Milan in the 1995 final and have warmed hearts with a thrilling run to the last four that has recalled the glory days of Johan Cruyff and total football.
Next up are Spurs, who Ajax meet after dispatching reigning European champions Real Madrid and Juventus - tipped by many to win the Champions League this season after signing Cristiano Ronaldo - with thrilling displays that enchanted football fans across the continent.
"After beating Juventus and Real Madrid, you're not afraid of anyone," Onana said in an interview with Agence France-Presse.
"They (Spurs) are a very good team. They have very good players, especially on the counter where they can create problems for us. But it's up to us to handle these situations."
Cameroon international Onana has been a fixture between the sticks as the Dutch giants hunt a historic treble that Ajax have not completed since Cruyff's 1972 heyday, when they won the second of three consecutive European Cups and combined that with the Dutch Cup and league title.
They are also top of the Eredivisie, although level on points with PSV Eindhoven, and take on Willem II in May's domestic cup final.
Â
Â
Â
Asked by AFP if he expected Ajax to go so far in Europe, Onana said: "To be honest, no! It's my first season in the Champions League and, when we qualified for the group stage, it was already like 'wow'."
Ajax's continental campaign kicked off against Austrian side Sturm Graz way back in July, the first of three qualifying rounds they had to negotiate before making the groups.
"We said to ourselves, there are six matches, let's see if we can hang on to the Europa League!"
Instead, Ajax finished comfortably second in Group E, unbeaten and only two points behind eventual group winners Bayern Munich, and now have a realistic chance of joining the Bavarians on five European Cups after turning on the style in the knockout rounds.
"It's the philosophy of the club and it's important for us to stay true to it: control the game, keep possession... it's clear that fans have been enjoying watching it, and we have fun playing it," said Onana.
Ajax have extra motivation going into their clash at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as they know that this is the last chance for this group of players to shock everyone and snatch the biggest prize in football.
Star midfielder Frenkie de Jong will leave for Barcelona in the summer for an initial €75 million (S$114 million), while centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, who sent Juventus packing with a bullet header in the quarter finals, could follow his teammate to Catalonia.
After knocking out Real, coach Frank de Boer admitted that forwards Hakim Ziyech and David Neres and Onana would also all be targeted by Europe's biggest clubs come the end of the season.
And the stopper wants to sign off this era with the perfect parting gift after missing out on the Europa League to Manchester United in 2017.
"It's clear that this is our objective. Not just for the goal in and of itself, but for us, because after this season, there will be a lot of players who will leave," said Onana.
"It is important for us to do something big. If that means winning the treble, well that will be simply beautiful."
For the first few minutes of Tuesday's Champions League quarterfinal second leg between Barcelona and Manchester United, it looked like the Red Devils might just be able to recapture the magic that allowed them to overcome a two-goal loss at home last month and upset Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.

Football: European leagues wrestle with racism after French Ligue 1 abuse adds to litany of woes
PARIS (AFP) - The interruption of the Dijon-Amiens Ligue 1 match on Friday (April 12) after visiting captain Prince Gouano was the target of monkey chants adds to a string of recent racist incidents across Europe.
It comes after rising Italy star Moise Kean was targeted by racist abuse in Cagliari in Serie A earlier in the month.
Monkey chants were aimed at England players during a Euro 2020 qualifier in Montenegro and there has been a series of episodes involving London clubs.
"Racism exists in the stadiums in France, but we cannot put the situation on the same level as in Eastern European countries or Italy," football sociologist Nicolas Hourcade, a professor at the Central School of Lyon, told AFP.
The goal-less draw in Dijon was halted in the 78th minute as players from both sides stopped playing and headed towards the touchline after Gouano said he heard insults.
"It's over," he said. "We're not playing on. I'm taking off my team-mates."
Players including Gouano went to remonstrate with fans.
Referee Karim Abed also asked the stadium announcer to "get the message across, if it happens again, we stop"
Following discussions between players, coaches and officials, play then resumed.
"In Dijon, we saw that it was an isolated supporter who could be identified and arrested," Hourcade said.
"In other countries, there are collective demonstrations where a whole section of the ground, or a good part of one, can shout monkey chants or racist slogans."
After the game, the French league (LFP) said it would investigate and also announced that Dijon had identified the culprit. The club said it intended to press charges.
"These disgusting shouts are contrary to the values conveyed by sport, they insult our Republic, and I welcome the rapid reaction of the LFP: racism will never have a place in France," responded Interior Minister Christophe Castaner.
Anti-racism campaigners urge abandoning matches.
"We do not tackle the subject of racism as we should," former France captain Lilian Thuram told AFP in 2018, after Blaise Matuidi suffered abuse when Juventus played at Cagliari.
"Why didn't the referee stop the match, why didn't the white players leave the field?"
"If there is no deal with the problem, it will be the same thing in 20 years," he said.
Yet the same thing did happen when Juventus played at Cagliari on April 2. Kean, along with Matuidi and Brazilian Alex Sandro, were targeted by monkey noises and jeers throughout the match.
Instead of denouncing their fans, Cagliari's leadership blamed Kean for celebrating his late winner by standing motionless and silent with arms spread in front of the hostile stand.
"Italy is a case apart for two reasons," Hourcade said. "The historical strength of the extreme right, and the presence of openly fascist fan organisations."
But in England too, there have been numerous recent incidents at all levels of football.
On Thursday, half a dozen Chelsea fans posted a video on social media in which they sang that Liverpool's Egyptian star, Mohamed Salah, was a "bomber". Chelsea identified and barred three of the fans.
Arsenal are attempting to identify a fan who was caught on video shouting racist abuse at Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli in a Europa League game on Thursday.
In December, Manchester City's Raheem Sterling was the target of insults at Chelsea and a Tottenham fan threw a banana in the direction of Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
One of the major issues is "to identify the perpetrators of these acts to punish them", said Hourcade.
Spurs' England defender Danny Rose has blasted the game's rulers for failing to rein in racism, calling their efforts "a farce".
Barcelona wrapped up their 26th LaLiga title as Lionel Messi came off the bench to score the winner in a 1-0 victory over Levante on Saturday that could be the catalyst for treble success.

'Openly fascist'

Football: New signing Fabregas hands Monaco first win in seven French league games
PARIS (REUTERS) - Cesc Fabregas netted his first goal with Monaco to give the struggling principality side their first French Ligue 1 win in seven matches as they beat visiting Toulouse 2-1 on Saturday (Feb 2).
The Spanish midfielder, who joined from Chelsea last month, fired home in the second half to help Monaco move from 19th to 18th in the standings and claim their first victory at home in the league.
They have 18 points from 23 games and are level on points with 17th-placed Caen, who have a game in hand.
In coach Leonardo Jardim's second game since he returned to the bench after Thierry Henry was sacked last week, Monaco showed some steel.
"I have congratulated the players for the first three points of this mini-league. Now we have to prepare for the next game," said Jardim.
"The last minutes were difficult. Even if we manage to forget the past, we hadn't won in a long time and it can get a little scary."
Monaco opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Aleksandr Golovin latched on to a Gelson Martins cross, only for Christopher Jullien to level five minutes later from close range.
The 31-year-old Fabregas, however, restored the advantage with a right-footed striker from the spot that went under the bar in the 62nd minute.
In Jardim's first game in charge earlier this week, Monaco were knocked out of the League Cup semi-finals by Guingamp on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Marseille dropped to 10th on 31 points after they lost 2-1 at Reims, with Clinton Njie's last-gasp goal being too little, too late after Tristan Dingome and Suk Hyun-jun had put the hosts in a comfortable position.
The Rockets guard probably felt his mission was successful after the two-time NBA MVP went scoreless in the first half. the playoffs with a 118-113 road win. Hottest Rim Protectors.
