Socceroos stumble

GROUP B

Australia 0

AL AIN • Australia coach Graham Arnold was defiant against criticism that his side were unable to create chances, after the Socceroos made the worst possible start to the defence of their Asian Cup crown yesterday with a 1-0 defeat by unfancied Jordan.
The Aussies, who won the title on home soil four years ago, dominated for long spells but failed to find a way to cancel out Anas Bani Yaseen's header in the Group B clash at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium in the United Arab Emirates.
"We gave away a sloppy goal and started slowly but, in the second half, we totally controlled the game and, on any other day, we could have scored and won the game," Arnold insisted after the match.
He also dismissed the suggestion that his side's approach to the game was arrogant, having previously stated that he expected his side to beat the Jordanians.
The 55-year-old added that the Socceroos will "dust ourselves off, recover well and mentally prepare" for the next game against Palestine.
While he remained defiant, his captain Mark Milligan admitted that nerves got the better of the team.

NOT TIME TO PANIC YET
We gave away a sloppy goal and started slowly but, in the second half, we totally controlled the game and, on any other day, we could have scored and won the game.
GRAHAM ARNOLD, Australia coach, insists his side played well despite the defeat by 109-ranked Jordan.

"The start of the game was lethargic, maybe a few nerves," he said. "It's the first time in a tournament situation for some of the boys."
Vital Borkelmans' Jordan, who are 68 places behind the Aussies (41st) in the Fifa world rankings, were resolute in defence.
The Socceroos went into half-time trailing by a goal and were fortunate not to be further behind.
Centre-back Bani Yaseen put his side in front in the 26th minute when he was given the time and space to head home Baha Abdelrahman's corner unchallenged, powering the ball beyond the flat-footed goalkeeper Mat Ryan.
"We knew where their dangers were going to come from and, on a set piece, we can't be conceding those goals," Milligan added.
"We know we need to be better, but there's still good signs, we know we have to execute better.
"I'm lucky I've got a great bunch of boys, this will hurt everyone, it's hurting me. We'll let Arnie have his say and get to work."
Four minutes later, Abdelrahman almost added a second when his free kick from the edge of the area speared towards goal, only for Ryan to push the ball onto the woodwork before it was cleared.
For all their possession in the opposition half, Australia crafted few clear opportunities, with Awer Mabil's shot coming back off goalkeeper Amer Shafi's legs and Jamie MacLaren heading over the bar.
Mabil hit the woodwork late in the second half as Australia grew increasingly desperate to find an equaliser and Shafi was kept busy until the final kick of the game as Jordan held on for a famous win over their more illustrious opponents.
Australia fans took to social media to blast Arnold and his team.
"So much wrong with that #Socceroos display. Lacking quality & composure, passion & desire. Huge amount of work to do," wrote one user. "Jordan implemented their game plan perfectly, we didn't even have one," said another.
The defeat leaves the Aussies with much to ponder ahead of Friday's game against Palestine, a must-win if they want to get their title defence back on track.

Football: Sissoko unaware Tottenham had advanced to Champions League semis after Sterling goal disallowed

(REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur's Moussa Sissoko did not realise his side had advanced to the Champions League semi-finals until a member of the coaching staff informed him in the dressing room that Manchester City's last-gasp goal had been disallowed.
With City leading 4-3 and the aggregate score reading 4-4 in favour of Tottenham on away goals, Raheem Sterling's stoppage-time goal sparked wild celebrations at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday (April 17) night, before it was overruled when the Video Assistant Referee adjudged Sergio Aguero offside in the build-up.
Sissoko, who was replaced in the first half after he picked up an injury, was so distraught after Sterling scored that he immediately walked down the tunnel to the dressing room and did not realise that the goal had been disallowed a minute later.
"I was on the bench when I saw the goal that made it 5-3," Sissoko told French sports newspaper L'Equipe. "I was so upset that I returned directly to the dressing room.
"I was alone, no one had accompanied me, no TV screen was broadcasting the game. In my head we were eliminated. Then one of the staff members entered the dressing room and told me: 'Incredible, we did it!'.
"I said: 'How did we do it?' At that moment, he told me that the goal had been disallowed.
"So I put on a T-shirt, I forgot about my injury and I ran outside to join the others, not to miss the celebrations for such a historic moment. It was an incredible, emotional shock."
The result ensured Tottenham, who last made the European Cup semi-finals in 1962, reached the last four for the first time since the creation of the Champions League. They will face Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam with the first leg in London on April 30.

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Burnley moved five points clear of the Premier League's relegation zone after an early Conor Coady own goal and a late Dwight McNeil strike gave them a 2-0 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday (March 30).
The result left Burnley 17th on 33 points from 32 games, five more than 18th-placed Cardiff City who have two games in hand and host sixth-placed Chelsea on Sunday.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche praised McNeil and was also upbeat about his team's chances of staying in the top flight.
"Dwight has got real quality and he has shown that again with a goal and an assist," Dyche told the BBC.
"He is 19 and delivering in the Premier League. He's certainly laid down a marker. He will be aware of some of the basics he still has to learn but I'm enjoying what he is doing.
"We have got 21 points since Christmas - that's a healthy return. That should leave us in good confidence."
Asked if Wolves had next week's FA Cup semi-final with Watford was on their minds, Coady said: "No, not at all. It's a good game coming up but we're not thinking about it.
"We have it all to play for in the Premier League. We want to finish as high as we can."
Wolves stayed seventh on 44 points from 31 games. They are ahead of Leicester City, who have played a game more, on goal difference.
Coady netted his third own-goal of the season in the second minute when he slid goalwards in an attempt to block Chris Wood's shot which struck the post and rebounded into the back of the net off the Wolves captain.
The visitors had a penalty appeal waved away by referee Christopher Kavanagh midway through the first half after Jonny Castro's shot struck Burnley striker Ashley Barnes in the arm.
Ivan Cavaleiro squandered a gilt-edged chance to equalise shortly after the break, blazing his shot over the bar after good work by Leander Dendoncker on the right flank.
That miss was punished in the 77th minute, when livewire McNeil picked his spot inside the penalty area and drove a fine shot into the bottom right corner of the net to seal Burnley's victory.

Football: Klopp dismisses talk of Liverpool crumbling under pressure

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp says his team have shown they are mentally equipped to handle a title run-in, having acquitted themselves well in high-pressure situations over the past few years.
Liverpool, who are five points ahead of defending champions Manchester City at the top of the table, drew 1-1 at home to Leicester City on Wednesday, prompting questions about their ability to stay the course as tension mounts in the run-in.
"Yes, there is pressure," Klopp told Liverpool's official website ahead of Monday's league game at West Ham United.
"There was pressure last year, a lot of pressure when we played Manchester City away in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and we dealt with it.
"There was pressure (in the Champions League semi-finals) at Rome, there was pressure in so many moments in the Premier League. We had to win each game.
"Will there be nervous moments? Yes, for sure. Don't make them bigger than they are because there were nervous situations last year, two years ago, three years ago. That is part of football."
Liverpool could end a 29-year wait for the league title if they can hold on until the end of the season and Klopp knows the club's fans are likely to be feeling tense.
"This club has not been champions for 29 years, so how can people sit there and watch it like (they are watching) City?" he said.
"I don't know how often they have been champions in the last five or six years - 'Yeah, one more, why not? Whatever.'
"It's a different situation. We really, the people really, desperately want it, that is how it is, they really want it with all they have. I get that and we try with all we have. But there are no guarantees. I am not a nervous person."

Football: Own goal helps Ireland edge Gibraltar 2-0 in Euro qualifying

DUBLIN (REUTERS) - Ireland had an own goal by Joseph Chipolina and an injury-time header by substitute Robbie Brady to thank for a 2-0 win over Gibraltar in their Euro 2020 Group D qualifier on Monday (June 10).
The Irish came into the game unbeaten at the top of the group following a 1-1 draw away to Denmark on Friday and, though they dominated possession throughout the match, they had a hard time hitting the target at the Aviva Stadium.
Striker David McGoldrick caused the visiting defence all sorts of problems and it was his 27th minute shot that Chipolina deflected into his own net to give Ireland the lead.
The home side created plenty of chances, with McGoldrick coming closest to doubling their advantage with a shot that hit the post before Brady stooped to head home in stoppage time.
Denmark had no such problems in Copenhagen, with Kasper Dolberg netting either side of a Christian Eriksen penalty and Yussuf Poulsen and substitute Martin Braithwaite also getting on the scoresheet in a resounding 5-1 win over Georgia.
Ireland have 10 points after four games with Denmark second on five from three. Switzerland, who finished fourth at the weekend's Nations League finals, are third on four points after two games with Georgia on three and Gibraltar bottom with none.

After today over 30% of Gibraltar's European Championship qualifying games will have been against the Republic of Ireland. In Euro 2016 qualifying, the Irish won 7-0 at home and 4-0 'away' - in

Football: No giant-killings as Palace and Wolves into FA Cup quarter-finals

LONDON (AFP) - Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers ensured they avoided becoming the latest Premier League clubs to be on the wrong end of a giant-killing in the FA Cup as they each beat lower league opposition on Sunday (Feb 17) to book their places in the quarter-finals.
Palace won 2-0 away to third-tier Doncaster Rovers, the lowest league club still in the competition, while Wolves beat Championship side Bristol City 1-0.
The day's other fifth-round tie saw Swansea beat 10-man Brentford 4-1 in an all second-tier clash.
Sunday's winners now join top-flight Manchester City, Brighton and Watford in the last eight, with FA Cup-holders Chelsea playing Manchester United shortly before Monday's draw in a repeat of last season's final.
First-half goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Max Meyer proved enough for Palace to win in Yorkshire.
Schlupp's low strike gave the Eagles, managed by ex-England boss Roy Hodgson, an early lead which Meyer double with a close-range header in stoppage time at the end of the opening period.
League Two Rovers enjoyed plenty of possession and got several shots away, but the difference in class between the two sides told in the end.
"We obviously knew if we got past this round we'd be in a good position to get to Wembley," Schlupp told the BBC.
"It's a special tournament and hopefully with the luck of the draw, we might get a lesser team to have a better chance of getting through."

Cavaleiro wins it for Wolves

Earlier, Ivan Cavaleiro's goal was enough to secure an away win for Wolves at Ashton Gate that saw the four-times FA Cup winners end their 16-year wait for a quarter-final appearance.
Bristol City had their chances but midfielder Cavaleiro's 28th-minute finish helped end their 15-match undefeated run and nine-match winning streak although it needed several fine saves from Wolves goalkeeper John Ruddy to secure victory for his side.
"Of course the goal was important and I'm very happy to score but the most important thing is the team move on to the next round," Cavaleiro told BT Sport.
Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo added: "It's hard to defend when they put so many people in the box and you just hope for the best sometimes." Asked about the draw, the Portuguese coach added: "You have to go game by game. I would like to play at home." Brentford took the lead just before the hour mark through Ollie Watkins' shot into the top corner.
But that was as good as it got for the Bees at the Swans' Liberty Stadium ground.
Early in the second half, the hosts equalised through a Luke Daniels own-goal before Dan James ran the length of the field to make it 2-1.
The Bees then saw defender Ezri Konza receive a straight red card for a foul on James just after the hour mark.
Bersant Celina, whose free-kick led to the own-goal, made it 3-1 in the 66th minute before George Byers added a fourth goal late on.

Football: Late Morgan header earns 10-man Leicester win at Burnley

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Wes Morgan's 90th-minute header earned 10-man Leicester City a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Burnley at Turf Moor in the Premier League on Saturday (March 16).
Chasing a second successive win under new manager Brendan Rodgers, Leicester's task was made all the more difficult when Harry Maguire was given a straight red card for fouling Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the fourth minute.
But it was the 10 men who took the lead in the 33rd minute, as James Maddison curled a brilliant free kick into the net, becoming the first Leicester player to score two goals from direct free kicks in a Premier League season.
Jamie Vardy almost doubled Leicester's lead before Burnley drew level through Dwight McNeil, who swept home Charlie Taylor's pull-back in the 38th minute to score his second Burnley goal.
Leicester dug in after the break, keeping plenty of men behind the ball to frustrate the hosts, as Ashley Barnes missed the best chance to give Burnley the lead.
However, Leicester snatched all three points through Morgan, who rose highest to ensure Rodgers' winning run continued Leicester opened up a three-point gap over Bournemouth in 11th place in the table while Burnley remained 17th, only two points clear of the bottom three.
"We stayed calm," Rodgers said.
"When we were down to 10 men, it was about having that energy and positive attitude. We have the resilience and spirit in this squad."
Burnley came into the contest on the back of three successive defeats, which have kept them embroiled in the relegation battle, but the home fans must have thought their luck was changing when Maguire fouled Gudmundsson.
That red card - the quickest in the Premier League in four years - did little to galvanise the hosts though, with Maddison's superb free kick adding to the woe on the Turf Moor terraces.
McNeil's fine finish five minutes later lightened the mood, but Burnley struggled to find that second goal, with Barnes' miss from close range late on proving costly before Morgan met Youri Tielemans' cross for the winner. Burnley have now conceded a league-high 10 goals in the 90th minute or later this season.
"We are in a tough spell now and you want to come away with something especially against 10 but it is no 'gimme'," Burnley manager Sean Dyche said.
"We did a lot right, but you have to score goals, simple as that."

LONDON • The path is now clear for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to take up the full-time reins at Manchester United, after the caretaker manager yesterday made clear he was no longer contracted to Molde.
Senior club officials believe it is now a matter of when, not if, he is appointed on a permanent basis.
According to The Times of London, he is seen as the only candidate for the job after their progression to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in midweek.
And pressure on the club's hierarchy to ask him to stay on after his interim tenure expires in the summer ratcheted up several notches after Solskjaer confirmed at his pre-match press conference "that contract (with the Norwegian outfit until 2021) was terminated".
Speaking ahead of tomorrow's Premier League trip to Arsenal, he said: "I am contracted to United until the end of June. With the contract issue, you cannot have two contracts when you are a manager."
The Norwegian, who took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, also brushed off the clamour for him to put pen to paper after overseeing United's best away run with nine straight wins as "just the media".

HE WON'T BE DISTRACTED
With the contract issue, you cannot have two contracts when you are a manager...I'm just doing the best I can every single day. If and when a decision is to be made, then we will see.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United's interim manager, putting the ball in the court of the Old Trafford board.

The team are also unbeaten in the league under him, with 14 wins in 17 games in all competitions.
He added: "I am not here to get excited, I am here to do my job. I love managing these boys and I love working here.
"I'm just doing the best I can every single day. If and when a decision is to be made, then we will see.
"Absolutely everyone likes to get complimented and meet people that are happy. But (that) doesn't change my approach whatsoever.
"I'm good at focusing on what I shall be focusing on and that's not thinking about that part of it."
He also revealed that United's absentee list - they travelled to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday with 10 first-teamers either injured, ill or suspended - was easing up.
Midfielder Paul Pogba, who was banned for the second leg, is expected to return to his starting XI.
Solskjaer also had positive news over defender Eric Bailly and forward Anthony Martial, with the duo likely to be available for the clash at Emirates Stadium.
Expressing his hope that midfielders Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera would also recover in time, before challenging his side "to get ready again for a fantastic game with Arsenal", he told reporters: "They just need to have another couple of days of training, they've done well in their recovery work."
Solskjaer also tipped forward Marcus Rashford to kick on following the stoppage-time penalty that sealed the dramatic 3-1 victory in Paris, comparing the 21-year-old to the way Cristiano Ronaldo cut his teeth at Old Trafford before moving to Real Madrid in 2009.
"Rashy's goals sometimes are worldies and he does have a sensational strike of the ball," he said.
"But you see the change in Cristiano's goals from when he was young to now, he scores more from inside the box and that's what Rashy has to improve as well.
"There are legends we've had at this club who have stayed long and been one-club players, and we hope Rashy will be one of them."

Football: 'It's cruel', says miserable Guardiola as City crash out

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola bemoaned VAR's failure to rule out Fernando Llorente's decisive goal for Tottenham as Manchester City's quadruple bid was shattered by a "cruel" Champions League quarter-final exit on Wednesday (April 17).
Guardiola's side were closing in on a place in the semi-finals after staging a thrilling comeback to lead 4-2 in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
But Tottenham striker Llorente bundled home in the 73rd minute via a combination of his arm and hip, with VAR allowing the goal on review despite City's appeals for handball.
Guardiola could be seen gesturing for handball while the VAR check was made, but his protest was in vain.
Adding to the City manager's frustration, Raheem Sterling appeared to have scored what would have been the winner in the final seconds of stoppage-time, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR for offside against Sergio Aguero.
"I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente's goal is handball, maybe from the referee's angle it is not," Guardiola said.
"I watched the action and the people from above decided it (City's disallowed goal) was offside.
"In the moment we celebrated and we were so close to the semi-finals.
"It is cruel but it is what it is and we have to accept it."
Despite the painful end to City's attempt to win all four major trophies this season, Guardiola insisted he was proud of the effort put in by his team and their supporters.

"We missed a penalty in the first leg but I am so proud of the players and the fans," he said.
"I have never heard noise like that since I have been in Manchester, but football is unpredictable."

'UNBELIEVABLE'

City now have to focus on retaining the title, with Tottenham their next opponents in the Premier League on Saturday.
"We have a lot of games from the league and FA Cup final. Today is tough and tomorrow will be tough too but the day after we will be ready," Guardiola said.
Mauricio Pochettino's men will return to Manchester this weekend on a high after one of the greatest results in the club's history.
Tottenham's only other semi-final appearance in Europe's elite club competition came in its previous guise as the European Cup in 1961-62.
Their semi-final date with Ajax will be Tottenham's first European semi-final since the 1984 UEFA Cup.
It is a personal triumph for Pochettino, who hasn't signed a single player in the last two transfer windows, yet managed to knock out one of the richest clubs in the world.
Saluting his side, who went through without injured striker Harry Kane following his injury in the first leg, Pochettino said: "It was unbelievable - the way it finished. I am so happy, so proud.
"My players are heroes to be here. I am so happy for them, so happy for the fans."
Admitting he was bewildered by the astonishing finale with Sterling's disallowed goal, Pochettino, who ended the night dancing on the pitch with his jacket off, added: "In a moment many things happened in your head, the disappointment was massive but they changed the decision.
"That is why we love football. Today we showed great character and great personality it was an unbelievable game."

Emery urges fired-up Gunners to keep cool heads
LONDON • Unai Emery has called on his players to "control their emotions" with Arsenal staring at a Europa League exit at the last-16 stage unless they can overturn a 3-1 deficit against Rennes in the second leg today.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos' sending-off proved costly in France as the Gunners leaked three goals after the defender's dismissal.
Their attack was also blunted owing to the suspension of Alexandre Lacazette, who was red-carded in the first leg of their last-32 tie with Bate Borisov.
But Arsenal got a big boost on Tuesday after Uefa reduced his ban to two games from three on appeal, meaning he will be free to feature at the Emirates.
While Emery is expected to field an attacking line-up, he does not want his side to lose their heads, especially if the French Ligue 1 outfit put 10 men behind the ball.
The Spaniard said: "We know that for example on Thursday one match can change a lot with one red card or goal, so controlling is very important."
His counterpart Julien Stephan feels packing his defence will only play into Arsenal's hands, with the hosts on an 11-game winning run at home in the Premier League and Europe since December.
Admitting the tie was far from done and Rennes "need to score there, at least once, if not twice", he said: "Arsenal remain favourites given their past and their experience."
In the other ties, Chelsea seem set to cruise into the quarter-finals after taking a 3-0 first-leg lead over Dynamo Kiev.

Football: Croatia, Hungary win to pull away in Euro 2020 Group E

OSIJEK, Croatia (REUTERS) - Croatia and Hungary pulled away at the top of Euro 2020 qualifying Group E after victories on Saturday in what is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive pool.
Both teams have six points from three games after a goal and an assist by Ivan Perisic gave 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia a 2-1 home win over Wales while a Willi Orban brace helped the Hungarians to a 3-1 win in Azerbaijan.
Wales and Slovakia have three points each from two games and Azerbaijan none.
Croatia dominated but were forced to hang on in the closing stages and Wales coach Ryan Giggs was disappointed his side came away empty-handed.
"We showed them far too much respect, we weren't aggressive enough early on and we made some stupid mistakes and got punished," he said.
"Now we prepare for Tuesday. Hungary are a hard-working, physical team, but we will need to play a lot better to get anything out of it."
Perisic blazed two shots over the bar before he set up Croatia's 17th-minute opener, when Welsh defender James Lawrence fired the winger's sharp low cross into his own net past stranded goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.
Perisic made it 2-0 early in the second half after he got on the end of a loose ball in the penalty area and drove it past Hennessey from 10 metres with his weaker right foot.
Gareth Bale twice came close for the Welsh before substitute David Brooks pulled a goal back in the 77th minute, beating Croatia keeper Dominik Livakovic with a deflected shot from 20 metres.
The visitors piled the pressure in the closing stages and midfielder Harry Wilson missed a gilt-edged chance to grab a late equaliser, heading a teasing Bale cross over the bar from five metres.
In Baku, Balazs Dzsudzsak showed his trademark set-piece skills as he floated in a free kick for Orban to fire Hungary ahead with a glancing header and then swung in a corner bundled in by the centre-back from point-blank range.
Azerbaijan halved the deficit when midfielder Mahir Emreli swept in a 68th-minute rebound but Hungary put the game beyond the home side's reach in the 70th as substitute David Holman drilled a fierce shot into the roof of the net.

Football: Benzema hat-trick helps Real back to winning ways in La Liga, Guedes double lifts Valencia's top-4 push

(REUTERS) - Karim Benzema netted a second-half hat-trick as Real Madrid got back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Sunday (April 21).
The Frenchman increased his tally to 21 league goals this season - the first time he has achieved the total since 2015 - and now has 10 goals in his last seven appearances for the club.
Victory left Real, who had drawn with Leganes in their last outing, in third place on 64 points. They are 13 points behind leaders Barcelona and four behind city rivals Atletico.
Zinedine Zidane once again left Gareth Bale on the bench, with Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio supporting Benzema in attack.
They initially cut frustrated figures throughout an opening period of few chances, with the Bernabeu crowd voicing their frustration.
However, the fans were soon serenading Benzema two minutes after the break when he opened the scoring.
Jesus Vallejo produced a brilliant last-ditch tackle on Inaki Williams and Real sprung a trademark counter attack, with Asensio leading the charge before centring for Benzema to nod in.
He doubled his tally 15 minutes from the end, heading in Luka Modric's corner after a calamitous misjudgement from Bilbao goalkeeper Iago Herrerin.
Substitute Brahim Diaz went close for the home side in the closing stages before Bale chipped a one-on-one over the bar.
The Welshman made amends moments later, latching onto another error from Herrerin, who had rushed out of his box in an attempt to clear the through ball.
His weak header dropped at the feet of Bale, who teed up Benzema to complete his hat-trick by firing into an empty net.
Bilbao have 46 points and stay seventh, six points behind Sevilla who are in the final Europa League spot.
In the later game, a brilliant double from Goncalo Guedes saw Valencia move into fifth place, as they recorded an impressive 2-1 victory at Real Betis to be in closer contention for the fourth and final Champions League place.
Guedes struck almost identical efforts from outside the box either side of half-time to move Marcelino's side to 52 points, leapfrogging Betis's local rivals Sevilla in the process on goal difference.
Getafe, who earlier on Sunday beat Sevilla 3-0, currently occupy fourth place with 54 points.
Valencia, who have lost just one of their last 22 games in all competitions and have reached the semi-finals of the Europa League and Copa del Rey, were good value for the victory even though they ended with 10 men after the dismissal of Rodrigo.

LONDON • With big names like Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane being bandied about, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment as Manchester United manager has largely been seen as a stop-gap measure until the summer.
While United have stated they will find a permanent boss, the caretaker is aware he can emerge as a shock candidate if results turn around, with the club off to their worst start to a season in 28 years.
At his first pre-match press conference yesterday, for the Premier League game at Cardiff today, Solskjaer said it was "an honour and privilege" that his former club had turned to him in the wake of Jose Mourinho's sacking. He said: "I've been here 11 years as a player, 31/2 years as coach, best part of 15 years of my life. There are so many who would love to be United manager. I'm one of them but it's not something we've talked about. My job is to do as well as I can."
He said that he had learnt from his mistakes at Cardiff, who were relegated under his watch in 2014, and had gained valuable top-flight experience since. He said: "I've had about 300 or 400 games as first-team manager (of Molde) and that period in Cardiff was a huge step for me. But if you don't make mistakes, you're not gonna learn."
Mourinho's dismissal was in part triggered by his fractious relationships with several players, notably Paul Pogba, who has been on the bench for United's past three Premier League games.
However, the Frenchman is expected to be one of the first names on the teamsheet at Cardiff and Solskjaer feels he can get the best out of not just the midfielder, but also other players ostracised by Mourinho like Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia, Fred and Anthony Martial.
The Norwegian, who is revered by the Old Trafford faithful for scoring the winner in the 1999 Champions League final, said: "It's about speaking to them about our philosophy, principles, how we want to play. We have quality players so it will be easier... You have to play with courage, go out there and express your skills."

THEATRE OF HIS DREAMS
I've been here 11 years as a player, 31/2 years as coach, best part of 15 years of my life. There are so many who would love to be United manager. I'm one of them... My job is to do as well as I can.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United caretaker manager, on returning to the club.

One Mourinho favourite will not be available. Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku is set to miss two games after being granted compassionate leave, with his return pencilled in for the home league game against Bournemouth next Sunday.
Despite being at the club for only four days, Solskjaer has also been quick to preach an attacking mantra, in contrast to the dour play favoured by Mourinho.
He told in-house broadcaster MUTV that they had to start acting like "the biggest club in the world", saying: "It's about the players being proud of their performances and the fans being proud of their team."
Although the Red Devils remain 11 points from a Champions League berth, a change in the team's football principles should at least bring about some much-needed festive cheer and Solskjaer believes they can bridge the gap in his 21 matches in charge once "the players understand how I want them to play".
He added: "Let's see how many points we can gather, but this club has made up many points before."
Cardiff boss Neil Warnock tipped Solskjaer to surprise the naysayers. He said: "It's the worst time you could play them (United), so many people wanting to prove things. He'll hold the fort until the end of the season and if he does well, he'll get a couple of years."

Football: Liverpool lead again as Man United, Arsenal falter in top four EPL chase

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool moved back top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at Cardiff, but Manchester United and Arsenal did little for their chances of Champions League qualification for next season in shock defeats to Everton and Crystal Palace respectively on Sunday.
United were thrashed 4-0 at Everton to continue a miserable run of six defeats from their last eight games.
Arsenal remain fourth, but failed to open up a five-point lead over United as Crystal Palace became the first visiting side to win at the Emirates in the Premier League since Manchester City on the opening weekend of the campaign with an impressive 3-2 victory.
Liverpool suffered no such slip ups to move two points ahead of Manchester City, who still have a game in hand, at the top.
Jurgen Klopp's men have now won their last nine games in all competitions, to also set up a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
"It's really massive. We spoke a lot about this game, how special it is, how special the situation is for the opponent," said Klopp, who bemoaned the dry state of Cardiff's pitch under baking temperatures.
"It was not a game for playing around. It was a battle of will, who wants it more." But in keeping with recent weeks, Klopp could not relax until late on as Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah missed big chances to give the visitors a first-half lead.
Georginio Wijnaldum finally broke the deadlock in emphatic fashion with a thumping finish from Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner just before the hour mark.
Liverpool had to survive one major scare when Cardiff captain Sean Morrison failed to connect with his head when it seemed harder to miss with the goal at his mercy 26 minutes from time.
Morrison then compounded his error at the other end when he grappled with Salah inside the area and referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot, even though the Egyptian threw himself dramatically to the floor.
James Milner stepped up to bury the resulting penalty and ensure Liverpool are poised to strike if City stumble.

Man United humiliated

Unfortunately, for Klopp's side, United look in no fit state to inflict the blow on the champions they need come the Manchester derby on Wednesday.
Everton celebrated their biggest win over a shambolic Red Devils since 1984 to move up to seventh.
Richarlison's acrobatic effort and a long range effort from Gylfi Sigurdsson inside the first 28 minutes gave Everton the perfect start.
And they struck twice again early in the second-half through Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott.
"From the first whistle everything went wrong," said Solskjaer.
"I just want to apologise to the fans. They're the only people with the badge on today who can hold their heads high, because we can't." And the Norwegian hinted that major changes are to come in the summer whether they reach the Champions League or not.
"We can't change the whole squad, it has to be one step at a time but I said all along, I'm going to be successful here and there are players who won't be part of that successful team."
Arsenal wasted a glorious opportunity to move above north London rivals Tottenham into third as after 10 straight home league wins, Palace shocked the Emirates with the three points that guarantees their survival.
Christian Benteke's first goal for a year put the Eagles in front before Mesut Ozil equalised early in the second half.
However, Shkodran Mustafi's blunder allowed Wilfried Zaha to put Palace back in front before James McArthur took advantage of more woeful Arsenal defending to make it 3-1.
"It's a big frustration because it was a big opportunity. At the set pieces, we didn't work and weren't as strong as we have been," said Arsenal boss Unai Emery.
"Their second goal was very bad for us and took away our confidence." Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reduced the deficit, but it was too late to stop Palace's first league win at Arsenal since October 1994.
