Football: Keane accuses Man United players of 'getting away with murder'
LONDON (AFP) - Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has accused the current crop of players at Old Trafford of getting away "with murder" and of throwing Jose Mourinho "under the bus".
The Irishman's broadside comes just days after Mourinho was sacked as United manager, having presided over their worst-ever start to a Premier League season.
Former United player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was this week named caretaker manager until the end of the season.
Mourinho had reportedly fallen out with several of his first-team stars towards the end of his two-and-a-half-year tenure at the helm of United and Keane feels the behaviour of the players may be at least partly to blame.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Keane said: "I do think the players obviously get away with murder. Just the way they hide behind the manager... They have thrown him under the bus.
"People said Mourinho has been falling out with players. Well, you would fall out with players, that's the name of the game when players turn up overweight or players aren't training properly and not producing.
"And then for some of them to down tools, shame on some of those players.
Â
Â
Â
"I'm not Mourinho's biggest fan, don't get me wrong but I just can't tolerate footballers who just hide behind their agents, their pals in the media. It's a bit of a joke, really."
Keane won seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League at United and believes any player unrest during his time in the dressing room would have been quelled.
"The modern player, they're not just weak players, they're very weak human beings," he said.
"You can't say a word to them."
He added: "It wouldn't have happened in our dressing room just because of the fact we had good characters and good leaders.
"We wouldn't have tolerated lads not putting a shift in."

Football: Guardiola praying Manchester City's players return injury-free for quadruple bid
LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hopes his players return injury-free from the international break this month for a hectic run of fixtures that could define the Premier League champions' season.
City play eight fixtures in 29 days after the international break with the club fighting on three fronts - the league, FA Cup and Champions League - as they seek a quadruple, having already won the League Cup last month.
They are currently second in the league with a game in hand, two points behind leaders Liverpool, while Guardiola's side also advanced to the FA Cup semi-finals and the Champions League quarter-finals.
"I pray that they come back fit," Guardiola told City's website. "They have to go to their national teams... enjoy and play for their country, but I hope they can come back fit like they are now.
"I just want them fit and here... With the fixtures we have in April, we need everybody, it's crazy."
Guardiola confirmed those not involved with their national teams would have a week's rest before returning to training but counted on his injured players to make a comeback and contribute in any way possible.
"Everybody is going to play and Kevin (De Bruyne), Fernandinho, John (Stones), Benjamin (Mendy) - they are all going to be back soon and we need them. Even if some play 10 or 15 minutes here and there," Guardiola added.
Â
"We need everybody because we have got to this stage where we are still in with a chance of winning three more trophies because of everybody. Not just 11 players, but everyone."
City's next game is a league trip to relegation strugglers Fulham on March 30.

Football: Struggling La Liga side Villarreal sack Luis Garcia after 50 days and a solitary win
MADRID (AFP) - Villarreal, without a victory in La Liga since the end of November, announced on Tuesday (Jan 29) that they have fired coach Luis Garcia after just 50 days at the helm.
"The club will announce the name of the new Villarreal CF manager in the coming hours," said the official website.
Luis Garcia replaced Javi Calleja on Dec 10. His only victory in any competition came three days later when Villarreal beat Spartak Moscow 2-0 at home to clinch first place in their Europa League group.
Since then, Villarreal have drawn four and lost two league games and been eliminated by Espanyol over two legs in the Copa del Rey, a run of eight matches without a victory.
The Yellow Submarine have sunk to 19th in the 20-team Liga and are five points away from safety. They are at home to Espanyol on Sunday and face Sporting Lisbon in the last 32 of the Europa League on Feb 14 and 21.
"The club would like to thank the manager for his hard work, dedication and professionalism, wishing him the best of luck throughout his sporting career," the website said, adding that Luis Garcia would say farewell at a press conference at the Villarreal training ground in the afternoon.

League is not won in January: Klopp
LONDON • Jurgen Klopp believes that the English Premier League title race is not over for Manchester City yet even if his Liverpool side beat the champions today.
Ahead of today's clash at the Etihad Stadium, Liverpool are top of the league on 54 points from 20 unbeaten games, seven points ahead of City (47) while second-placed Tottenham have 48.
"If we were 10 points behind, would I say we can't catch them? Of course not. It's (only) Jan 3. It's a motivation for them 100 per cent and we need to be ready," the Reds manager said.
The German arrived at his pre-match press conference at the club's Melwood training ground yesterday in a jovial mood, saying to reporters: "Happy New Year to all of you! So far nothing to moan about."
He was upset, however, with how Liverpool are considered favourites for today's clash and talk of them being champions when the season has only passed the halfway stage.
"People say we go there most likely to win... It's not true. It's not reality," he said. "When I pass people on the streets, it's still normal life. Do they like how the boys are playing? For sure. But it's a lack of respect to think our fans are celebrating already.
"It will be a very difficult game. City are a really strong football team with an outstanding manager. We have to be brave and full of desire. They are the best team in the world, that is my opinion.
"The points change, but the preparations don't."
His opposite number Pep Guardiola tried to rally his men, saying that "nobody" thinks City are going to win the showdown.
He said yesterday: "It is Liverpool, with (Manchester) United the best team in England in history. But we can beat them. I know today nobody trusts us, nobody makes one coin for us, but it is what it is.
"They are in the moment the best team in Europe, in the consistency, the way they control the details in their game.
"The reality is clear, we are seven points down... (but) a lot of points to play for. Everybody is asking me what will happen if you lose.
"I have a feeling there is a big opportunity for us to reduce the gap."
His men will have to breach a backline that has conceded just eight goals, with the addition of Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker and a first full season with the world's most expensive defender Virgil van Dijk.
After a slow start, the front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are also beginning to hit top form, scoring in the same league game for the first time this season last Saturday in the 5-1 home win over Arsenal.
"Results and performances give confidence. We have results and performances. Our boys have quality. As long as we mix up potential with attitude, there will be quality," Klopp added of his side, who have won nine straight league games.
City, on the other hand, have been on a poor run of late, losing three of their past five league games including two in a row against Crystal Palace and Leicester City.
They looked to have turned things around with a 3-1 win over Southampton, but Liverpool will be a completely different test.
The champions have found it difficult against the Reds, winning just four of the 16 meetings between the two since the Manchester club won the Premier League in 2012.
They are also currently on a four-game winless run in all competitions against Liverpool, with the 0-0 draw at Anfield in October ending a run of three straight defeats.
Guardiola will hope that Sergio Aguero can continue his excellent streak against Liverpool, scoring in all six of his last home league games against the Reds.
The striker said on the City website: "Of course, I want to score as much as I can to help the team win and, if that's the way it panned out against Liverpool so far, then I hope I can keep the streak going.
"December didn't pan out the way we wanted it to and now we've got more ground to make up.
"Our focus should be on our own game. We are confident in our playing style and we believe it's the most effective to lead us to victory."
Guardiola agreed that it is all about how they can bring out the best in their game.
The Spaniard said: "Our focus is the same. We are going to try to make our game, to be there and be fighting for the Premier League for as far as possible."

The Manchester City midfield is littered with stars such as Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva, yet it was 18-year-old Phil Foden who scored the winner in the 1-0 win over Tottenham yesterday.
The England Under-17 World Cup winner, who reportedly became a first-time father in February, headed home his first league goal in only his second Premier League start at the Etihad in the fifth minute.
He said: "Luckily I was on the line to tap it in, when the opportunity comes I just try to take it and help the lads. I'm just happy to help the lads today."
City manager Pep Guardiola said Foden is "more than ready. He scored a goal, he fought a lot".
He added: "Playing in the Premier League is an incredible experience for him, he's so dynamic and adds extra intensity into our game.
"I wanted more attack and aggression in the box. He has the capacity with his work and ability, today was tough against top players and he did well."
Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes that the manager had been under growing pressure to give the starlet the chance to shine.
"To play him in his first game or his second Premier League start in such an important game, there comes a point where Pep Guardiola thinks here it is," he told Sky Sports. "This is the moment I have to get him into the side.
"The sort of feedback I have been getting in the last weeks is that there is a feeling in the club that if they don't get this kid in, they might all stop having an academy."
The lifelong City fan, known in some circles as the Andres Iniesta of Stockport, came into prominence in 2017 when he won the Golden Ball at the Under-17 World Cup. He was also named the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year that year.
The academy graduate made his City bow in the Champions League in 2017 against Feyenoord, and scored his first senior goal in the 3-0 League Cup victory over Oxford United the following year.
He also netted twice in the 4-1 win over Newport County in the FA Cup in February.
Of his playing style, Foden said: "I try to get into the box because that's where you score goals. I am an attacking midfielder, I will always try to be in the box, today it paid off."

MADRID • Thibaut Courtois overcame the toy rat insults and Gareth Bale delivered a timely reminder of his talents with his 100th goal for Real Madrid in Saturday's feisty derby victory that reignited their LaLiga hopes.
The 3-1 over Atletico Madrid - their fifth straight league win - helped Los Blancos leapfrog their city rivals into second place for the first time since September.
They are on 45 points, five behind Barcelona, who played at Athletic Bilbao in the late game yesterday.
Real continued their revival under Santiago Solari in another impressive performance at the Wanda Metropolitano, aided by some fortunate decisions.
"LaLiga is there to fight for, there are a lot of points to win and any team can make your life hard," said Real captain Sergio Ramos.
"Winning the league motivates us, it's a really balanced competition and we have to keep fighting for it and make life difficult for Barcelona."
Bale had been left out of the starting line-up for the second time in four days, after he was also a substitute against the Catalans in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.
He ended the hosts' hopes of a comeback on 74 minutes after Ramos' penalty put Real in front at half-time, with Antoine Griezmann earlier cancelling out Casemiro's acrobatic opener.
The Welshman's goal was not lost on Solari, even if his celebration drew criticism, after he appeared to make an insulting gesture towards the Atletico fans.
"It's great for Gareth," said the coach. "He was very happy and happy about his goal, which helped decide the game, because the game was alive and he finished it."
By the time Atletico's Thomas Partey was sent off with 10 minutes left, the game was up and Courtois could have been forgiven for breathing a sigh of relief at the final whistle. The Belgian, who spent three years at Atletico, was playing in the white of Real for the first time at the home of his former club.
He was whistled during the warm-up and before kick-off, as the Atletico ultras behind the goal hurled dozens of toy rats towards his head. A sign read, "Thibaut - Rata", just to underline the point.
Alvaro Morata had gone the opposite way, also via Chelsea, after starting out at Real. He was cheered and, despite a quiet game, would have scored but for the video assistant referee (VAR) ruling out an impressive lob in the second half for offside.
The system was also involved in the penalty incident which saw Jose Gimenez dive in from behind on Real midfielder Vinicius.
The foul might have been outside the box, but the VAR disagreed.

NEWPORT, Wales (REUTERS) - Manchester City endured some anxious moments but escaped from fourth-tier Newport County with their FA Cup hopes intact as Phil Foden scored twice in an ultimately comfortable 4-1 fifth-round victory on Saturday (Feb 16).
Newport, 82 rungs below City on the English football ladder, rattled Pep Guardiola's aristocrats in the first half and Tyreeq Bakinson almost gave them the lead at a rocking Rodney Parade.
But City's class showed in the second half and once Leroy Sane's powerful shot from a tight angle put them in front after 51 minutes the chances of a seismic Cup shock faded away.
Foden's 75th-minute shot crept in at the near post to subdue the home fans but when Padraig Amond maintained his run of scoring in every round with an 88th minute lob it seemed possible Newport's fairytale might have a late twist.
But a second goal for youngster Foden arrived 71 seconds later before Riyad Mahrez rubbed salt into Newport's wounds with virtually the last kick of the game as City claimed a 12th win in 13 matches in all competitions.
"It was a really tough game and it was lucky that Phil got the third goal," Guardiola, whose side are still chasing silverware on four fronts, said.
"Newport used their strengths and we are not used to playing against that every week. That's why the Cup is so special."
In the day's other ties Brighton and Hove Albion shrugged off their poor Premier League form to beat Frank Lampard's Derby County 2-1 thanks to first-half goals by Anthony Knockaert and Juergen Locadia.
Former Chelsea and England left back Ashley Cole grabbed Derby's consolation - his first FA Cup goal.
Millwall booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over an AFC Wimbledon side who had outclassed top-flight West Ham United in the previous round.
Three more ties take place on Sunday, with top-flight Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace both in action, while on Monday Chelsea host Manchester United in a repeat of last season's FA Cup final won by Chelsea.
THROW-IN BARRAGE
Newport's historic Rodney Parade stadium was packed to the rafters long before kick off as the home fans gathered in hope of witnessing what manager Michael Flynn claimed would be the greatest FA Cup shock of all time.
At times during the first half Guardiola's City slickers, who put six goals past Chelsea last week, appeared decidedly uncomfortable under a barrage of long throw-ins.
From one such delivery Newport seemed certain to take the lead when the ball bounced up invitingly for Bakinson who had all the goal to aim for with a close-range header, but City keeper Ederson appeared from nowhere to make a stunning save.
City dominated possession with Sane grazing the bar and Mahrez going close but Newport were always a threat and Joss Labadie skewed a half chance wide from another long throw.
Six minutes after the break City went ahead when Sane's fierce shot smashed Joe Day straight in the face on its way into the net - the keeper getting a bloody nose for his trouble.
Day, who sprinted off the pitch to attend the birth of his twins following Newport's fourth-round win over second-tier Middlesbrough, was at fault as Foden made it 2-0.
The 30-year-old Amond took advantage of a lapse to dink Newport's reply, briefly restoring the decibel-level in the stadium, but Foden's sweet left-foot strike and Mahrez's cool finish spared City any late anxiety.
"I am very proud to have scored in every round but disappointed we didn't get the grand slam finish we were hoping for," Irish striker Amond said.

Football: Solskjaer promises no complacency as permanent Man United boss
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has promised there will be no complacency from him or the players now he has been confirmed as the Premier League club's permanent manager.
Solskjaer was handed the job on Thursday (March 28) after a successful three months as caretaker boss, but he said there would no easing off now he has a three-year contract - setting the Premier League title as his goal.
"Players who get complacent, they never last at this club anyway," Solskjaer told a news conference.
"I am the same, I can't be complacent and now rest on (the fact that) I have the job, It's not me. We are looking forward, we have got to work harder," he added.
In keeping with that approach, Solskjaer side-stepped a question about his pride at his appointment.
"Now the hard work starts, the enjoyable work but hard work, it is not a moment to be proud in that respect," he said.
"I have got some targets, I want a Manchester United team that is one of the hardest-working teams in the league, one of the fittest teams in the league and that then will bring results. I think the players know my expectations on the future," he added.

The 46-year-old Norwegian has guided United to 14 wins in 19 matches in all competitions as caretaker boss since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.
His short-term target is to secure a top-four finish and qualification for the Champions League but Solskjaer said that winning the Premier League was his goal.
"To lift the Premier League trophy again is what we expect, what we're used to, what we have done so many times," he said.
"We can't wait too many years but it's not going to happen overnight."
In the longer term, he said he wanted to continue the positive mood around the club.
"The day I walk out of the doors, I hope it is with a smile on my face and have given the supporters, the staff, the players, the club, a good time and that is all I can do, all I can promise, all I've promised to the owners, to (CEO) Ed (Woodward), everyone," he said.
"I will always be myself, I am not going to change, I will be an optimist and positive guy and we will do this together."
The Norwegian's back-room staff is expected to stay as it is with his assistant Mike Phelan, brought back to the club with Solskjaer in December, now in contract talks.
"Mick is a key part of the set-up and they are talking to each other," said Solskjaer.
"The set-up we have now I really hope is going to continue."

Football: Chelsea's Olivier Giroud seeks France return to boost game time
LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud wants to move back to France when his contract expires at the end of the season after growing frustrated by a lack of playing time under manager Maurizio Sarri.
Giroud has not started a Premier League game for Chelsea since the club signed Argentina international striker Gonzalo Higuain in January.
"The future may be hectic this summer," Giroud told French radio station RTL. "I'm not afraid to go down a level to have more playing time. It could be I end my career in France."
The striker, who won the World Cup with France last year, scored 33 goals in 73 league appearances for Montpellier before moving to Arsenal in 2012, and has attracted interest from Olympique Lyonnais, according to reports in the French media.
The 32-year-old has been used mainly in the Europa League by Sarri and is the competition's top scorer this season with nine goals in nine appearances, but does not believe he can force his way into the Italian coach's Premier League plans.
"Today, I have the impression there's clearly no competition (for places in attack) since January. It's like that, I know that I will only play in the Europa League," Giroud added.
"I try to do what it takes to be as effective and as important as I can for the team." Chelsea are sixth in the Premier League, three points below the fourth and final Champions League qualification place currently occupied by Arsenal.
Sarri's side could also secure Champions League football for next season by winning the Europa League, where they face Slavia Prague in the quarter-finals.

First Fandi Ahmad, then V. Sundram Moorthy, and now Singapore has a third local-born Lion plying his trade in Europe.
After a successful one-week trial, Ikhsan Fandi, the second son of local football legend Fandi, signed a two-year deal with Norwegian second-tier club Raufoss on Saturday, making him the first Singaporean international to join a European club in 30 years.
Sundram played for Swiss side FC Basel from 1988 to 1989, while Fandi was with Dutch team Groningen from 1983 to 1985.
While Ikhsan, 19, will kick off his European sojourn with a more obscure team away from the bright lights his father was used to, the football agent who helped broker the deal told The Straits Times Raufoss could be a useful springboard to launch his career. Mr Navjot Singh Brar said: "Ikhsan fits what Raufoss are looking for - a young striker with good potential and attitude, and we expect him to play and not just be a name on the squad list."
He was confident that if Ikhsan played well regularly, he would be talent-spotted by a larger club.
The 1.83m, 79kg forward had a breakthrough year last year, scoring five times in eight games for Singapore from September to November, including a bicycle-kick goal in the 6-1 AFF Suzuki Cup win over Timor-Leste. He also netted eight times in 20 games for the Young Lions in the Singapore Premier League.

Football: Manchester City should forget about quadruple and focus on Cardiff, says Pep Guardiola
LONDON (Reuters) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has told his players to put thoughts of a potential quadruple to the back of their minds and focus on Wednesday's (April 3) game against Cardiff City in the Premier League.
With the League Cup already in the bag, Guardiola's side are second in the league, two points behind Liverpool but with a game in hand, and have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and semi-finals of the FA Cup.
While his side have every chance of claiming all three remaining titles still up for grabs, Guardiola said they could just as easily come away with nothing.
"In one week or three days we can lose all three titles," he told a news conference on Tuesday. "Why talk about the quadruple when in this country - a legendary country - it has never happened before.
"Legendary teams like Liverpool, the period (of Manchester United) with Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, Arsene Wenger with Arsenal - no one did it. So why should we do it?"
Victory over Cardiff would lift City back above Liverpool before they face Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup semis on Saturday. They then face Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League tie on Tuesday.
"I'm not in the minds of my players and the fans to tell them what to think," Guardiola added. "If they want to dream and think about winning everything, I'm not a guy to say anything.
"Of course we are there but I said to the players, 'Forget about it, don't think too much. In one week or three days we can lose all three titles, that's the reality.
"I know in your heads we can win all the titles, but for now it's Cardiff.'"

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen will see a neurologist on Thursday (May 2) after suffering a horrific head injury during his side's Champions League semi-final defeat against Ajax.
Vertonghen was dazed and covered in blood following an accidental collision with Tottenham team-mate Toby Alderweireld in the first half on Tuesday.
The Belgium international initially tried to play on after being checked by Tottenham's medical staff, but he still looked groggy and had to be helped off the pitch moments later.
It was feared Vertonghen had suffered a concussion, raising questions about the decision to allow him to briefly resume play.
Vertonghen has shown no ill-effects since and tests so far have been all clear, but Tottenham revealed he will go for an additional examination with the specialist on Thursday.
"Jan Vertonghen has undergone further assessment today (Wednesday 1 May) after sustaining a head injury in last night's Champions League semi-final first leg against Ajax. He also suffered a small cut to his nose that was bleeding heavily," a Tottenham statement said.
"Jan was immediately withdrawn as a result of the player informing medical staff that symptoms were developing suddenly and that he no longer felt stable standing up.
Â
"Tests today have been clear and testing will continue for the next few days.
"Additionally, as is standard club policy with certain injuries, we shall also be seeking independent advice and Jan is due to see a neurologist, who specialises in elite athletes, tomorrow. The player has reported no ill-effects today."

PODGORICA • European football's governing body Uefa yesterday charged Montenegro over racist behaviour by their fans towards England players during their Euro 2020 qualifier.
Gareth Southgate's men were irrepressible as they ran out 5-1 winners. However, the rout was soured by the prolonged racist abuse, leading to calls for stadium bans.
Defender Danny Rose was subjected to monkey chants while forward Raheem Sterling, who called for Montenegro supporters to be banned from matches, was also targeted on Monday night.
Calling the abuse as "not acceptable", England manager Southgate told TV channel ITV Sport: "I definitely heard abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game. There's no doubt in my mind that happened."
And Uefa has taken action by starting disciplinary proceedings, with the case set to be heard on May 16. Montenegro could face a partial or full stadium closure for their next qualifying match.
But Southgate, whose side ran riot on the night through Michael Keane, Ross Barkley's brace and a penalty from Harry Kane before Sterling added gloss to the scoreline, felt "sanctions are worthless if there is nothing alongside that to help educate people".
The 48-year-old added: "There's an innocence about young people that is only influenced by older people. We have to make sure the education is right for everybody, in our country, the same."
He also said he had yet to talk to Sterling, who responded to the taunts by cupping his hands to his ears towards a section of Montenegro fans when he scored late on.
The Manchester City player told Sky Sports after the Group A game: "I didn't hear (the chants) personally, but Danny made it clear and (made me) aware that's what they were doing, so I just wanted to show them they were going to need more than that to upset and stop us.
"It's a shame to see this keep going on. It's now time for the people in charge to put a stamp on it. You can fine someone, but what's that going to do? You've got to punish the fans who can't come to the games.
"You've got to do something that will really make them think twice because if their team can't play with fans, it's going to be difficult for them."
He later took to social media to revel in the resounding victory, tweeting: "Best way to silence the haters... (and yeah I mean racists)."
Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi, who became the second-youngest England player to start a competitive game at the Podgorica City Stadium, also felt the provocative goading was "not right".
Admitting it had marred his career milestone, the 18-year-old told beIN Sports: "You are trying to enjoy the moment but, when you are hearing stuff like that from the fans, it's unacceptable.
"I don't think discrimination should be anywhere - we are equal. Me and Rosey heard it, the 'Oooh, Oooh' monkey stuff.
"Hopefully, Uefa will deal with it."
The unsavoury scenes drew swift condemnation from other parties, with football's anti-discrimination group Kick it Out tweeting: "Disgraceful to hear racist chants directed at black England players this evening.
"As we've argued countless times, it's time for Uefa to take strong, decisive action - fines won't do. Extended stadium bans or tournament expulsion are what's needed."
Pundit Ian Wright agreed, claiming that a slap on the wrist would be little deterrence. The former Arsenal striker told ITV: "They (Montenegro) will be fined a pittance, and we'll get the same thing again here the next time or somewhere else. It's not going to stop them."

LONDON • The star of the show was the stadium. It was as if Tottenham players were waiting until the second half when they were attacking the South Stand with its magnificent bank of 17,000 fans, before allowing themselves to feel at home, and Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen duly scored.
This was a night for Spurs fans to savour a 2-0 Premier League win over Crystal Palace that took them back above their neighbours Arsenal into third spot, but it was an evening that meant even more.
It meant they now have the finest stadium in the country. All those planning debates, frustrating delays and rising expenses were upliftingly worthwhile.
Fans, players, staff and board stood during the brief ceremony and looked proudly around on Wednesday. Harry Kane, usually the model of professional focus, permitted himself a glance up, admiring his new home.
Club chairman Daniel Levy dreamt big with the state-of-the-art building and now has to dress the windows. He has not signed any player in the past two transfer periods.
Palace held Spurs to a goal-less first half, but the hosts were not to be denied. Ten minutes after the restart, Son fired in a shot that thrilled the crowd of 59,215 before Eriksen added the icing on the party cake 10 minutes from time.
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said his club are now "World Cup winners" in terms of facilities and called on his players to now perform at a "world-class" level.
"Now we are World Cup winners in facilities," said Pochettino. "Now the stadium is here and we need to be on the same level."
Yesterday, Spurs announced a world-record net profit of £113 million (S$201.4 million) in 2017-18, but costs for the club's new stadium rose above £1 billion.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea beat Brighton 3-0 to move level on 63 points with Arsenal.

Football: Vatican women strap on their boots for the first time in World Cup year
ROME (AFP) - More than three decades after it first put out a men's team, women are finally strapping on the Vatican's colours of yellow jersey and socks and white shorts and bearing the keys of St Peter and papal tiara crest.
For 35 years, the world's smallest state has put out a men's team that for one match in 2010 was coached by European Cup winner Giovanni Trapattoni, while eight teams have competed in its men's championship for nearly half a century, with players coming from the iconic Swiss Guards, Museums and the economic services.
"We thought the time was right to try to organise something, training and matches, also for women," Danilo Zennaro, a representative of the Vatican sports association, told AFP.
And for a few months now, a group of about 20 women - including Vatican employees, wives and workers from the Bambino Gesu pediatric hospital administered by the Holy See - meet once or twice a week to train on the grounds of the Pius XI sports centre in the shadow of the Dome of St Peter.
The training kits are mismatched, the level of play variable with a lot of toe-poking going on, but serious effort is being made ahead of a match with Serie A side Roma and then a tournament in Vienna later this month, with the session continuing until late into the night.
"We are a very heterogeneous group, there are young people aged about 25 and 50-year-olds," said 35-year-old Vatican employee Maura Turoli, who has little footballing experience but now plays as a defender.
"It's wonderful to be on the pitch and see husbands and children waiting for us and supporting us on the other side of the fence."
Although Pope Francis, an Argentinian, recently spoke of football as "the most beautiful game", the three words "football", "women" and "Vatican" are not necessarily ones people would put together in the same sentence.
However, Turoli says that they "will try to disprove this idea and show that we have our place".
Teammate Floriana Di Iorio, who was already part of the women's team at the Bambino Gesu hospital, says this team "goes beyond sport" and wants to "spread a message of great openness".
"The main objective is to convey a message of union, to be consistent, to keep our enthusiasm and perhaps also to be examples in places where the role of woman is still seen as a little marginal."
A "spirit of union" is also what team coach, Gianfranco Guadagnoli, who works in the Vatican Post Office, wants to achieve.
"We've just started this group, the first training session was one of pain, problems ... But they are doing better than expected," said Guadagnoli, who also coaches the men's team.
"We've never played an 11-a-side and on a big pitch, but Roma have come forward and ... we will try, even if our means are not those of a Serie A team.
"It does not matter, we go with our qualities and whatever happens happens, without problems or dramas."
The match proceeded as expected, with a game understandably reduced to two 20-minute halves ending in a double-figures defeat and a baptism of fire for a trailblazing team.
