Football: Gunners have 'hell of a lot of work to do'

LONDON • Riding high until two weeks ago, Arsenal's season has taken a sudden downturn that has thrown the focus firmly on the club's plans for the January transfer window.
Before the visit to Southampton on Dec 16, the Gunners had gone 22 games without losing and it seemed like the trajectory of Unai Emery's side was undeniably on the up.
The defeat at St Mary's has, however, triggered a downturn with just one win in five games, including Saturday's humiliating 5-1 defeat at Premier League leaders Liverpool. Arsenal now sit five points off the top four and anything less than three points in the home league meeting with Fulham today will further undermine the club's hopes of reclaiming a place in the Champions League.
Pundits have already written off their chances, with former Gunner Martin Keown claiming there was "a hell of a lot of work to do".
He told BT Sport: "Arsenal are in the beginning of their (project)."
Injuries have not helped with defenders Nacho Monreal, Hector Bellerin and Shkodran Mustafi all doubts for the Emirates clash, while auxiliary wing-back Ainsley Maitland-Niles and out-of-favour midfielder Mesut Ozil are also uncertainties.
However, goalkeeper Bernd Leno declined to use their growing casualty list - which includes long-term absentees Rob Holding and Danny Welbeck - as an excuse following the mauling at Anfield, urging his teammates to show their mettle against the Cottagers. The opposition are on a three-game unbeaten run.
"I don't think that was the difference," the German said. "We as a team made too many mistakes. We have enough quality, even when somebody is injured.
"Injuries were not the problem. We have to look forward because we have another important game on Tuesday.
"It's the first game of the year and on Tuesday, we want to beat Fulham at home. We need to win."
Defender Stephan Lichtsteiner also vowed that the team would "never give up" on their bid to finish among the Champions League places, saying: "We'll aim for that. Until the end we'll work, we'll believe... It's a challenge and one we need to accept."
But burly Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who ended a six-game drought to sink Huddersfield at the weekend, will surely relish the challenge of pitting his wits against a makeshift and vulnerable Gunners backline that has already let in 30 league goals - five more than at the same point last term.
The Serb, who has scored eight league goals this season, has been their star player and he felt his winner "gives us confidence before facing Arsenal".
The coming weeks, starting with Fulham, will go a long way towards shaping the remainder of Arsenal's season.

A lot of work to do. Defensively, I like that we won the ball higher up the pitch at times. But we still look like we can't keep up with the opposition when we have to defend in our half. And the passing out the back was not very good. Cech is not cut out for this level anymore. And Bellerin continues to look below average.
Arsenal transfer news: 'Gunners, Crystal Palace and Leicester

Arsenal must learn to adopt the right mentality away from home or they will once again miss out of Champions League football. That's the concern of former Gunners striker Kevin Campbell, who won the title with the club back in 1991 and made more than 200 appearances for them.

"He's had a lot of injuries, but I think he'd be a great addition for most Premier League teams. Maybe not in the top three or four, maybe not for Liverpool or Manchester City, but he could go to a team like Arsenal. "I would love my old club Palace to get him, and Leicester could be a good shout - he and Brendan Rodgers work well together.

Football: Messi and Suarez rescue Barca in 4-4 draw at Villarreal

VILA-REAL (REUTERS) - Barcelona's Lionel Messi came off the bench to help the Liga leaders battle back from 4-2 down in stoppage time to snatch a remarkable 4-4 draw at struggling Villarreal on Tuesday (April 2).
The Catalans avoided a first league loss since November with a last-gasp Luis Suarez strike after captain and top scorer Messi gave them hope with a deadly free kick in the 90th minute.
The draw resulted in Barca's lead over nearest challengers Atletico Madrid, who had earlier won 2-0 at home to lowly Girona, being trimmed to eight points ahead of Saturday's top-of-the-table showdown at the Nou Camp.
Even without Messi, Gerard Pique and Ivan Rakitic in their starting lineup, the visitors still strolled into the lead through a Philippe Coutinho goal in the 12th minute, which Brazilian forward Malcom soon doubled with a header.
But Villarreal, who began the game hovering one point above the relegation zone, hauled themselves into contention with a strike from 19-year-old Samuel Chukwueze midway through the first half.
Cameroon striker Karl Toko Ekambi took advantage of slack positioning from Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to equalise soon after the interval and Vicente Iborra completed the home side's remarkable revival just after the hour mark.
Messi was called from the bench to rescue the champions but instead Villarreal increased their lead with a strike from their substitute Carlos Bacca.
Alvaro Gonzalez was then dismissed for Villarreal for a second booking with four minutes remaining, paving the way for Messi and Suarez to strike for Barca and produce a remarkable finish to an enthralling contest.

Football: British rescuers launch bid to recover body from Sala's plane

LONDON (AFP) - British crash investigators on Tuesday (Feb 5) launched an underwater operation to recover a body from the wreckage of the plane carrying Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala in the Channel.
"We are attempting to recover the body. If we are successful, we will consider the feasibility of recovering the aircraft wreckage," an Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) spokesman said in a statement.
The light aircraft carrying the 28-year-old footballer and pilot David Ibbotson to his new Premier League team Cardiff City disappeared near the British island of Guernsey on Jan 21.
The shipwreck hunter hired by Sala's family with the help of funds donated by football stars such as Lionel Messi found the plane wreckage on Sunday.
The AAIB has since taken over operations.
It revealed on Monday that an unidentified body had been found at the site.
But it warned on Tuesday that strong tides "mean we can only use the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) for limited periods each day".

Body found in Sala plane wreckage, AAIB confirm

"Regardless of the results, we will not be making a further statement until the families have been informed," it said.

'TECHNICALLY POSSIBLE'

Shipwreck hunter David Mearns had earlier warned that "time is of the essence" in an underwater operation like the one being launched by Britain off France's northern coast.
"As tragic as the loss is, it's made much, much worse if the body is never recovered or (the family) never get an answer to what happened," Mearns said.
"Finding it is just the starting point. The AAIB has got to investigate it."

Sala was flying to join up with Cardiff from his old French team Nantes.
His signing was the most expensive in the Welsh club's history and marked what fans had hoped would be a turning point in its bid to avoid relegation from England's top division.
Mearns said his discovery of two seat cushions on the French coast last week revealed that the plane had broken up.
"It's in one area (on the seabed), it's all one mass, but some bits may not be connected. So what you don't want to do is to disturb the body in a way that you lose it," he said.
Sala's family raised more than €370,000 (S$570,000) in an online campaign to pay for the private search.
"Had that not happened, I don't think anybody would have searched for the plane," Mearns said.
"We were told by the AAIB that they didn't feel that there was much to be gained," he said.
The AAIB ended up chartering a ship to join Mearns on Sunday.
He said recovery was now "technically possible - the water depth isn't an issue really, and the weather can be managed with the right ship".
"It's a matter of will to do it," he added.

United will attack PSG, vows Solskjaer

United will attack PSG, vows Solskjaer

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer further endeared himself to the Old Trafford faithful after confirming Manchester United would stay true to their attacking ethos and not sit back ahead of the first leg of their Champions League last-16 meeting against Paris Saint-Germain today.
British media reports have indicated that the interim manager will land the job on a permanent basis in the summer after engineering a run of 10 wins in their past 11 games since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.
But Solskjaer brushed off the speculation, which will surely hit fever pitch should the Red Devils get past a PSG side shorn of Neymar and Edinson Cavani - claiming there were still a "few more months for me to do whatever I can do for the club".
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, he was brimming with confidence as he declared: "If ever there was a time for us to play big games, it's now."
Asked if he had any inkling he would be in the dugout when the last-16 draw was made in December, he said: "Of course, I didn't know. I was watching it with my son Noah and said, 'Wow that is a tough challenge'. But we have given ourselves the best possible opportunity in the way we have gone into tomorrow's game.
"When Manchester United ring and ask you to help, you say yes. The Champions League is a fantastic tournament. It is a test for our whole team.
"I have loved every single minute of it. We knew we had a big challenge in front of us because we were far behind in the league, confidence was low after Liverpool, but they have responded fantastically.
"I don't think we could be in a better frame of mind and looking forward to the next few games.
"We are confident. We have found what team we have, we are looking like a team, and we are agreeing on how we should approach games."
France forward Anthony Martial, who sat alongside the manager, agreed it was "easier to play this style of football compared to (the) previous style we were asked to play" in a dig at Mourinho.
Solskjaer warned his opposite number Thomas Tuchel that when United "are on song, not many teams enjoy their nights at Old Trafford", he also revealed the plan to take the game to the opposition.
He added: "It's about always believing in yourself. If you asked other managers who played against Sir Alex (Ferguson's) teams, the pace and the tempo going forward were key.
"I have three good forwards (Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku), as well as (Alexis) Sanchez and (Jesse) Lingard. They can challenge PSG's defence."

THE GOOD OLE UNITED WAY
It's about always believing in yourself. If you asked other managers who played against Sir Alex (Ferguson's) teams, the pace and the tempo going forward were key. I have three good forwards myself. They can challenge PSG's defence.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United interim manager, confident that his rejuvenated side can pose a real threat to Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League last-16 clash.

While his managerial record in domestic competitions with United stands up to scrutiny, this will be his first test against elite European competition.
But he remains far from cowed at playing under the floodlights.
Recalling how "the biggest nights of my career have been Champions League nights", the 45-year-old, who scored the winner in the 1999 final which helped the club secure the treble, said: "Both the supporters and players have been looking forward to a night like this because they have always been special."
Solskjaer also dismissed suggestions that a PSG side without Cavani, Neymar and Thomas Meunier would be there for the taking, insisting it made them "more unpredictable".
He added: "Any team that are missing players will feel the effect, but that will give the others the chance."

Football: Emery inspired by rivals

Football: Emery inspired by rivals

LONDON • Unai Emery believes Pep Guardiola is the best coach but sees the Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur models as the way forward for Arsenal.
The manager is eight months into the Gunners job, and ahead of today's reverse with Guardiola's Manchester City, who beat him in his first game in English football, he spoke about drawing inspiration from the champions' title rivals.
He explained he cannot spend big like City, evidenced by his lone January signing of Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona following a summer window that saw them go for less established players.
"I remember three years ago, Liverpool were playing in the Europa League final, they were in the top four in the Premier League, and their progress is very good progress and now they are the favourites," Emery was reported as saying.
"Maybe Manchester City is a different example, because they bought a very important lot, with paying a lot and maybe we can't do that now like that.
"But we can also do one way similar to Liverpool, similar to Tottenham - doing more with young players, using well players who can improve with us.

A MODEL FOR PROGRESS
"... We can also do one way similar to Liverpool, similar to Tottenham - doing more with young players, using well players who can improve with us.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, on learning from league rivals to find a good model to develop his team to challenge Manchester City.

"We are doing that. We need time but also we need to be very demanding of ourselves."
And there is no man who is more demanding than Guardiola, 48, whom he has never beaten.
Said Emery, 47: "I have analysed a lot of teams and coaches and I think it's difficult to find one coach who is better than Guardiola."
Guardiola returned the compliments about his fellow Spaniard.
He told Sky Sports: "I've never been with him in his clubs but my impression from outside is that he's a manager who is well prepared."
Guardiola is demanding a big improvement from his team because he knows just how crucial the next eight days will be in determining whether the title ends up in the trophy room at Anfield or the Etihad Stadium come May 12.
After hosting Arsenal, they travel to Everton on Wednesday before playing Chelsea at home four days later. If City win all three games, the worst-case scenario is that they will be two points behind Liverpool, who have no midweek fixture.
The Reds play West Ham tomorrow, before playing Bournemouth at home five days later.
City's accuracy has dipped this term. Last season, they averaged 2.79 goals per game compared with 2.63 this term. Their shooting accuracy has also diminished, with 38 per cent of their shots hitting the target rather than 40 per cent.
So it is just as well that they are facing a team with a defensive injury crisis. Guardiola was annoyed by City's failure to break down Newcastle United's rigid and compact defence in their 2-1 loss last Tuesday but, otherwise, he was giving little away.
He said: "Many details we didn't do quite well. Of course we analyse, we talk about our game and see what we have to improve, like the way we have to attack some defensive structures like Newcastle, but it will be different against Arsenal."
Emery did let on more, saying: "Usually we want to have more possession than the opposition but, against City, maybe it is not possible because they impose usually the possession first and the positioning. But we are going to try to not let them have the possession very easy and also don't let them have the positioning better than us.
"But this detail is a big detail!"

PARIS (REUTERS) - Edinson Cavani is a major doubt for Paris St Germain's Champions League clash with Manchester United after picking up a thigh injury in his team's 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Girondins de Bordeaux on Saturday (Feb 9).
The Uruguay striker left the pitch on the stroke of halftime holding his thigh, soon after scoring with a penalty in the 42nd minute.
The French champions will be missing Brazil forward Neymar, who has been ruled out with a foot injury, for the last-16 first-leg clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
"I honestly don't know if Cavani will play. Yes it is worrying. We don't have another Edi like we don't have another Neymar," said PSG coach Thomas Tuchel.
Italian midfielder Marco Verratti is also doubtful due to injury.
"There are a lot of plans B. Without Ney, maybe without Marco, maybe without Edi. We have a plan D," German Tuchel said.
"It's super difficult. If we miss several players the challenge will be even bigger. But we will be ready on Tuesday."

My job is always at risk, admits beleaguered Sarri

My job is always at risk, admits beleaguered Sarri
LONDON • Maurizio Sarri admitted that he does not know if Chelsea will sack him and said it was right that there should be scrutiny of his position following the 6-0 hiding at Manchester City on Sunday.
This was the Blues' biggest defeat since a 7-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in April 1991.
Asked if he feared losing his job, the manager said "I don't know" before admitting "my job is always at risk", a situation that is hardly likely to be helped by what he went on to say to Sky Sports Italia: "If the president (Roman Abramovich) calls, I'll be happy, seeing as I never hear from him. To be honest, I don't know what to expect."
The owner's record with managers suggests Sarri should not expect to be in charge for much longer, with further quotes attributed to the 60-year-old suggesting that he is unsure of how to transform the fortunes of a team who have dropped to sixth.
"Matches like this can leave a mark. It won't be easy to get back on our feet after this," Sarri said.
"Football is also made of heavy defeats. At half-time, I told the lads that if we were able to react, we'd come back stronger than ever."
Chelsea's run of three away league defeats saw them concede 12 goals, including four at Bournemouth and two at Arsenal, to pile the pressure on a manager whose insistence on adhering to his philosophy of possession football is frustrating the Chelsea fans.
The Italian remains unmoved, saying: "My target is to play my football, and not to change to other football (styles). Today I didn't see my football. At the beginning, it worked so now we need to understand the reason why at the moment it isn't working."
At the end of the match, he failed to shake Pep Guardiola's hand.
He said: "I didn't see him at that moment. Of course it's usual to shake. I'll go to say hello to him later. I've no problem with Pep."
Guardiola said: "I spoke with Gianfranco Zola (Sarri's assistant) and it's no problem. I have a good relationship with him."

Ole rues missed chances

Ole rues missed chances

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has described the 2-0 defeat by Arsenal on Sunday and the consequent failure to apply pressure in the race for the Premier League's top four as his "lowest" point since taking charge of Manchester United in December.
The caretaker manager also blamed his first defeat in 13 league matches on missed chances.
Romelu Lukaku and Fred hit the woodwork as United failed to score for the first time in 22 away games in all competitions this season, missing the chance to move level on points with Tottenham in third place in the league.
"The performance was good, but the result was disappointing... we lost and missed the chance to put pressure on Spurs," Solskjaer said. "It is one of those days you have to dust yourselves down from.
"We created miles more chances than we did when we won here in the FA Cup (a 3-1 fourth-round victory in January). Sometimes, you don't take them and we just didn't take them.
"We have won games we have not deserved to win, and today we lost a game we did not deserve to lose. Hopefully, we will be ready for Wolves in the FA Cup next week."
While Solskjaer admitted his players "did not have the zip" at the Emirates, ending a club record of nine straight away wins, he also attributed the loss to a soft spot kick decision, which was converted by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
"The referee (Jon Moss) will be disappointed when he sees it as I don't think it is a penalty," he said.
"I don't think there's enough contact there (on Alexandre Lacazette). It's not a dive, but apparently, Fred is very strong."
Although pundits blamed United goalkeeper David de Gea after he was caught wrong-footed for Granit Xhaka's long-range opener, Solskjaer exonerated him from fault as the Arsenal midfielder had struck the ball like a Brazilian.
Former United defender Gary Neville told Sky Sports the Spain No. 1 had "made a big mistake" and "it was a determining factor", while former Leeds defender Danny Mills told BBC Radio Five Live it was "an incredibly poor error (as) it wasn't a particularly well-hit shot".
But Solskjaer dismissed Xhaka's strike as "one of those things", adding: "I don't class it as a mistake. We didn't put enough pressure on (him), it swerves and moves. It goes to David's left and changes direction completely."
The Norwegian's sombre mood was, however, in contrast to Unai Emery's players, who seized the opportunity to mock Jesse Lingard after the game.
The United forward, who did not play owing to injury, had incensed the Gunners with his moon-walk celebration after scoring in the FA Cup meeting and for tagging the Emirates as his "dance floor" on his Instagram account.
Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil referenced him in a post-match tweet which read: "Dance floor huh?! Superb performance! Brilliant result! Thank you Emirates Stadium! Proud to be a Gunner!"
Goalkeeper Bernd Leno also revealed the team were "motivated" to gain a measure of revenge over Lingard. The German said: "In your mind, you will never forget something like that.
"You don't want to see it again... we knew before the game about our chance because United had one more point than us.
"Now we have a two-point lead. We are in the top four and the other teams now wait for our mistakes."

Football: Qatar thrash UAE amid shoe barrage to reach Asian Cup final

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Qatar punished unwelcoming hosts United Arab Emirates 4-0 in a politically charged clash marred by disgraceful behaviour from shoe-throwing fans on Tuesday (Jan 29) to reach their first Asian Cup final.
The Qataris, whose national anthem was drowned by boos before the game, face Japan in Friday's final after goals from Boualem Khoukhi, Almoez Ali, Hasan Al-Haydos and Hamid Ismaeil sealed victory for the 2022 World Cup hosts amid ugly scenes in Abu Dhabi.
As they celebrated a famous win and record sixth clean sheet at a single Asian Cup, plastic bottles rained down from angry local fans - as they had for each Qatari goal, with midfielder Salem Al-Hajri even hit on the head after their third.
"It wasn't an easy situation," admitted Qatar coach Felix Sanchez.
"The players were aware there was going to be a lot of pressure but they managed their emotions quite well - I'm very proud of them."
A match bristling with simmering regional tension over the long-standing Gulf blockade of Qatar quickly burst into life as a meaty tackle from Bandar Al-Ahbabi on Akram Afif put the Qatari midfielder up in the air.
But Qatar drew first blood after 21 minutes when Khoukhi's shot squirted under UAE goalkeeper Khalid Eisa, to the horror of a hostile crowd of 38,000.
Afif was then targeted by bottle-throwing Emirati fans as he tried to take a corner, appealing desperately to the referee as he stepped away from the kick.
Qatar exacted swift retribution eight minutes before the break, however, Ali smashing home a right-footed shot from the edge of the box to equal Ali Daei's 1996 record of eight goals in a single Asian Cup.
INSULTING PROVOCATION
As the Sudan-born striker celebrated, more bottles and even shoes - a deeply insulting provocation in Arab culture, as former US president George W. Bush famously discovered on a visit to Baghdad in 2008 - were flung at the players.
A half-time entertainer sang "Let's bring Asia together" but there was little harmony in evidence as the crowd - boosted by mass give-aways exclusively to locals - continued to hurl abuse at the Qataris.
Runners-up the last time they hosted the Asian Cup in 1996, UAE almost pulled a goal back after the interval when Ali Mabkhout forced Saad Al-Sheeb into a fingertip save before Ahmed Khalil also tested Al-Sheeb's reflexes.
But Qatar never looked seriously troubled and captain Al-Haydos coolly chipped in a third to spark further chaos as the atmosphere began to turn sinister, Al-Hajri knocked to the ground as more missiles streamed onto the pitch.
Defender Ismail Ahmed was then shown a red card in stoppage time for an elbow on Al-Hajri, before Ismaeil added a breakaway fourth to compound UAE's misery.
"I apologise to the leadership of the country," said Alberto Zaccheroni after his last game as Emirates coach.
"I don't think the sensitivity of the fixture had any impact on the result. We simply failed in our objective and I assume full responsibility."

Football: Liverpool held at Everton to surrender top spot in Premier League

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool were left to regret two huge missed chances by Mohamed Salah as Everton held out for a 0-0 draw in the Merseyside derby on Sunday (March 3).
Jurgen Klopp’s men now trail champions Manchester City by a point at the top of the Premier League with nine games remaining.  Salah was denied by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and a last-ditch challenge by Michael Keane either side of half-time as Liverpool dropped points for the fourth time in six league games.
Fabinho was also guilty of wasting a big opportunity 21 minutes from time as Lucas Digne cleared when the Brazilian took an age to control Virgil van Dijk’s knockdown.
Everton remain without a win in the Merseyside derby stretching back to 2010, but may have done enough to stop their local rivals from winning the title for the first time in 29 years.
Salah has now scored just once in his past six matches and wasted by a distance the best chance for either side from the sort of situation he finished with ease in a 44-goal debut season at Anfield last year.
Pickford was at fault for Liverpool’s 96th minute winner when the sides last met in December, but the England number one went some way to making amends by standing tall to block as Salah bore down on goal before Seamus Coleman threw himself in the way of a follow-up attempt from Jordan Henderson.
That was a rare glimpse of goal in a first-half which generated plenty of excitement and atmosphere but little in the way of goalmouth incident.

Everton have endured a disappointing season after spending big in the summer to back Marco Silva and their lack of quality on the ball showed despite their commitment and desire to close Liverpool down.  The hosts at least opened the second-half with slightly more urgency, Dominic Calvert-Lewin rising to meet an early Lucas Digne corner, with a header that was saved comfortably by Alisson Becker.
At the other end, Salah spurned another chance when the ball broke his way off Kurt Zouma, but the Egyptian took a heavy touch and allowed Keane to make a stunning recovery tackle.  Klopp had seen enough by just after the hour mark and brought on James Milner and Roberto Firmino, recovered from his recent ankle injury, in a bid to turn one point into three.
The Brazilian almost made an instant impact, marauding forward with Salah, but his cross proved a little long for Sadio Mane who could only head back across goal harmlessly.  V
an Dijk was again peerless in his defensive duties and nearly set up the winner had Fabinho been sharper to fire home the Dutchman’s knock down.  Roared on by an increasingly vocal home crowd, Everton also created some late chances with a cross from substitute Richarlison coming within inches of finding the sliding Bernard.
However, for the third time in Liverpool’s last four matches the game ended scoreless to hand City the initiative in the title race.Â

A 28-year-old supporter from Nantes had been filming the players and mocking them as "worthless" when the forward, who was clearly incensed, grabbed the hand holding the mobile phone and shoved it towards the fan's face.
While authorities have yet to determine what action he will face, French broadcaster RMC have reported that he is looking at a ban of between five and eight matches.
The incident has capped a miserable few days for the world's most expensive player at €222 million (S$338.9 million).
Last Friday, Uefa slapped a three-match European football ban on Neymar after his foul-mouthed tirade at officials following PSG's Champions League last-16 defeat by Manchester United.
The shock French Cup loss to Rennes, going out 6-5 on penalties after the final ended in a 2-2 draw, also meant that the cash-rich French champions have missed out on multiple trophies for the first time since 2013.
Neymar has since defended his reaction on his Instagram page, admitting that though he "acted badly, no one can stay indifferent".
However, his transgressions have gone down like a lead balloon with both PSG coach Thomas Tuchel and the Brazilian media.
Asked about the scuffle, the German coach blasted: "I don't like it. You can't do that, you just can't do that. It's not easy to go up the steps after a defeat. It's very difficult for me, for everybody, but we have to accept it.
"If we lose, we have to show respect. You can't get into a fight with a spectator."
Media back home, including daily Folha and website Terra, also took on a similar tone, branding the Brazil international a "coward" and "rebellious adolescent" and "appears incapable of dealing with criticism, of dealing with frustrations".

Bale will stay despite disgraceful fans: agent

Bale will stay despite disgraceful fans: agent

MADRID • Gareth Bale's agent has criticised Real Madrid's "disgraceful" fans and told them that they will not force the Wales forward out of the club.
The 29-year-old was booed and jeered by Real's supporters after being substituted during last Saturday's 1-0 LaLiga loss to rivals Barcelona, a result that left his side 12 points behind the table-toppers.
In their previous league match against Levante six days earlier, Bale snubbed his teammates when they tried to celebrate with him after he scored the winning penalty.
That provoked a furious reaction in the media, which also claimed that Bale was unpopular in the dressing room because he speaks only rudimentary Spanish, and has missed social meals with the squad as he prefers playing golf and going to bed early.
But Jonathan Barnett, Bale's agent, said that there was no question of his client, who joined Real for a club-record £85.3 million (S$152.3 million) from Tottenham in 2013, leaving the club in the close season and that no club in England could afford his wages.
He has three years left on his contract at Real, which is worth £350,000 per week after tax.
Barnett said: "There has not been one single discussion about Gareth leaving Madrid. He isn't going anywhere this summer. The fans are a disgrace.

MORE RESPECT PLEASE
In the six years he has been in Spain, he has won everything... Those fans should be kissing his feet.
JONATHAN BARNETT, Gareth Bale's agent.

"This generation of Real fans will be talking about Gareth's goals for years to come. Frankly, they should be ashamed of themselves. Gareth deserves the greatest of respect.
"The way the Real fans have treated Gareth is nothing short of a disgrace.
"In the six years he has been in Spain, he has won everything. He is one of the best players in the world. Those fans should be kissing his feet."
While Spanish daily Marca said that Bale had been upset by interviews given by his teammates Marcelo and Thibaut Courtois in which they claimed that he does not speak much Spanish, Barnett refuted the reports.
"Despite what the Spanish press are reporting, he is happy," he said. "He speaks reasonable Spanish and there is no problem between him and the rest of the Real players."
Bale has won LaLiga once and the Champions League four times as a Real player, and has scored 13 goals in 33 games this season, although manager Santiago Solari has preferred Lucas Vazquez and Vinicius Jr in recent games.
