Football: Marvellous Messi hits hat-trick as Barcelona torment Betis
SEVILLE (REUTERS) - Lionel Messi was lauded by opposition supporters on Sunday after he scored an outstanding hat-trick in Barcelona's 4-1 win at Real Betis, which put the Catalans 10 points clear at the top of the La Liga table with 10 games remaining.
With nearest challengers Atletico Madrid falling to a 2-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao the previous day, Messi got Barca off to an ideal start by drilling a free kick into the top corner of the net in the 18th minute.
The Argentine put Barca further at ease with another strike at the end of the first half, finishing off a backheeled pass from Luis Suarez as the two South American forwards carved their way through Betis's defence.
Uruguay forward Suarez had missed several clear chances to score but he finally got his reward for a lively performance with a goal in the 63rd minute, dancing past four Betis players on a dazzling run which began in his own half.
Loren Moron pulled one back for Betis in the 82nd minute but Messi replied with a sumptuous first-time lob in off the crossbar to complete his treble and the Betis supporters responded by chanting the Argentine's name and bowing down to him.
It was an utterly dominant performance from the La Liga leaders which avenged their 4-3 loss at home to Betis in November and took them on to 66 points after 28 games, while Atletico have 56 and third-placed Real Madrid have 54.
There were worries for Barca at the end of the game, however. Suarez, clearly in pain, had to receive treatment on the sidelines after hurting his ankle.

Football: Barcelona agree deal to sign Brazilian Emerson in July
MADRID (REUTERS) - Barcelona have agreed a deal to sign 20-year-old Brazilian Emerson from Atletico Mineiro for €12 million (S$18 million) and the right back will join the club in July, the Spanish champions said on Thursday (Jan 31).
The Brazil Under-20 international, who has made 23 appearances for Mineiro, will spend the rest of this season on-loan at fellow Spanish top flight side Real Betis.
Emerson is Barca's fifth signing of a busy January following the loan arrivals of Jeison Murillo and Kevin-Prince Boateng.
The club also announced that Ajax's Frenkie de Jong will join in the close season, while Munir El Haddadi left the club to join Sevilla and Denis Suarez departed for Premier League Arsenal on loan.
Barcelona also reached a deal in early January to sign Jean-Clair Todibo of Toulouse, with the Frenchman initially set to join at the end of the season.
Barca issued a statement late on Thursday, however, saying the 19-year-old would instead be joining the club immediately.
"Barcelona and Toulouse have arrived at an agreement for the French player Jean-Clair Todibo, with whom Barca had previously agreed to incorporate beginning on July 1, 2019, to instead join the Catalan club with immediate effect," Barcelona said.
"The 19-year-old will sign for the next four and a half seasons, through the end of the 2022/23 season."

Football: Barcelona is greater than the sum of its parts, says Manchester United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
LONDON • Lionel Messi has scored 22 Champions League goals in 30 appearances against English teams - more than any other player in the history of the competition.
But Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no plans to man-mark the Barcelona talisman in the first leg of their quarter-final tie today, despite admitting he "will go down in history as one of the best ever".
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, he said: "Messi will be difficult to stop but never impossible, it's not like Messi against Manchester United, (there's also Luis) Suarez, (Philippe) Coutinho, (Arturo) Vidal, so many good players. We can't focus on one, we have to focus on (all) 11 of them.
"What kind of plan can you have to stop one of the best in the world? This season we (have already) played against (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Kylian) Mbappe, and now Messi. They're challenges I relish, I say bring it on."
Although this is the first time Solskjaer will face the 31-year-old and his team as a coach, there is someone who has a wealth of experience trying to shackle the Argentina captain and whose experience he has drawn upon - his mentor Alex Ferguson.
Revealing he had tapped the former United managerial great's inside knowledge, he said: "Of course, I've spoken with the gaffer since the draw was made but no details... You look at what you'll do against them and we're ready."
While Solskjaer is fully aware "we have to defend well against them", he also urged the Old Trafford faithful to come out in droves as "we will need the crowd in a game like this".
The Norwegian said: "Hopefully, a bit of rain will make for a special evening. Confidence is high. The result, what we did against Paris Saint-Germain, and how we have climbed the table, clawing back points.
"The players have given themselves and the supporters great belief. I can feel the tension, the excitement. The Champions League is possible and we can go on to win it. There will have to be luck and margins, we must perform at the best."
But even if the Red Devils fail to match the Catalan giants' "quality" at home, the tie - their first meeting since the 2011 Champions League final - is "not going to be decided until we play 90 minutes in the Nou Camp".
Backing midfielder Paul Pogba to "perform tomorrow as his job is to be the creator and to drive us forward", Solskjaer added: "We know we can't give fouls away, look how many goals Messi has scored from free kicks outside the area (seven this season), we have to be careful.
"(But) the Champions League throws up so many strange results, we just have to make sure we perform to our best and have a result to take over to Barcelona."
The 46-year-old also touched on Barcelona defender Gerard Pique's first return to his "second home" of Manchester since leaving the club in 2008, before jokingly drawing a parallel with their age gap.
He said: "Gerard, I used to play with him. He came as a young boy (Pique is now 32), we had a lot of belief in him.
"He was maybe unlucky, he came here when (Nemanja) Vidic and Rio (Ferdinand) played here so he didn't get the chances he probably deserved.
"It will be nice to meet him again. Hopefully, we can make him feel old, and not me young."
United also received a boost after it was revealed forward Marcus Rashford would likely be fit, although midfielder Nemanja Matic remains a doubt.

Barcelona v Man United: Epic Champions League battles
2011: FINAL, WEMBLEY
This was the last time the two European football juggernauts met in a competitive fixture.
It was, however, far from a tight contest as United were overrun in midfield while Lionel Messi led their defence on a merry run as Barcelona ran out 3-1 winners.
This was tiki-taka football at its peak, with Pep Guardiola lifting his second European Cup as a manager.
2009: FINAL, STADIO OLIMPICO
While United were ultimately outplayed in the 2-0 loss, they departed Rome asking life's cruellest question - what if?
Despite a blistering start, during which they were on top, they failed to score before their defence gave away a soft opener to Samuel Eto'o.
The Red Devils could only rue Darren Fletcher's ban that left Michael Carrick isolated in midfield against Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, with the former eventually supplying Messi's headed goal.
2008: SEMI-FINAL 2ND LEG, OLD TRAFFORD
Former United manager Alex Ferguson and his assistant Carlos Queiroz were so determined to restrict the away side's "passing carousel" that they went through an unprecedented level of tactical preparation in training.
The attention to detail worked as they restricted Barcelona to few chances and no goals across the two legs, reaching their first Champions League final since 1999 thanks to Paul Scholes' howitzer on a night of raw emotion.
It was probably, across both legs, their most negative performance in Ferguson's 26 years at the club, but the end justified the means, with United going on to claim their third European Cup.
THE GUARDIAN
The Norwegian said: "Hopefully, a bit of rain will make for a special evening. Confidence is high. The result, what we did against Paris Saint-Germain, and how we have climbed the table, clawing back points.

PERTH • Australia captain Tim Paine yesterday praised his emerging team for finding a hard-nosed identity appropriate for their reformed demeanour after a 146-run victory against India in the "bruising" second Test.
Having set the visitors a daunting 287 runs to win on the Perth Stadium pitch, Australia dismissed top-ranked India for 140 midway through the first session on the final day to level the four-match series.
After losing the series opener in Adelaide by 31 runs, the hosts held the upper hand throughout to secure Paine's first win as skipper in his fifth match at the helm.
He told reporters: "Really happy with the competitive, hard style we played. We're slowly building into our style of cricket.
"We stuck to our guns and delivered skill under pressure, and managed to keep ahead in the game."
His side's on-field behaviour was under the microscope in the aftermath of the damaging ball-tampering scandal in March and they have opted for a staid approach since.
In a tension-filled second Test, Paine heatedly clashed with counterpart Virat Kohli on several occasions, conjuring images of previous fiery contests between the teams.
But the wicketkeeper felt Australia had struck the right balance, insisting he was right to "draw a line, and stick up for yourself and teammates".
He said: "We talk about playing on skill and not emotion. We know our best cricket is played when we put emotion aside, (but) we aren't going to sit back and be walked all over."
The 34-year-old also hailed their well-rounded performance, which started with a 112-run opening stand between Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch on the opening morning, laying the platform for a first innings total of 326 - the highest of a low-scoring match.
"As a group, we're relieved, it's been hard work. It's been a bruising test match," Paine added.
"To get a win like that against the No. 1 Test team is going to give us a huge boost of confidence."
The series now shifts to the traditional Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground followed by the finale in Sydney on Jan 3.

Football: Tampines Rovers, Home United and Hougang United aim to dethrone Albirex Niigata in S'pore Premier League
SINGAPORE - Since 2015, no local team have won the Singapore Premier League (previously known as S-League), and no team could break the Albirex Niigata title monopoly since 2016.
But a trio of regular contenders and dark horses have emerged in a bid to end the Japanese team's dominance in the 2019 season.
Five-time champions Tampines Rovers proved their mettle early on with a 4-0 pre-season win over the White Swans and will be keen to show they are way better than their fourth-placed finish last season.
With chairman Desmond Ong handing out multi-year contracts since coming on board in 2017, the Stags are benefiting from the stability and continuity as their players are showing a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities on the pitch.
Even as 19-year-old Singaporean Joel Chew and 20-year-old Serb Zehrudin Mehmedovic look set to be a revelation in midfield with their intelligent play, Tampines are also banking on those at the other end of the experience spectrum to make a difference.
Canadian Jordan Webb, 30, is entering his 10th SPL season and for a winger, has an outstanding record of 79 goals in 208 league games, while 41-year-old centre-back Daniel Bennett is into his 21st SPL season.
Possibly the longest-serving import in the local professional game, Webb has thrilled fans with his ability to take on and beat defenders. He said: "Time moves so fast. I want to play for a few more years and win some silverware.
Â
Â
Â
Â
"Having kept the bulk of players from last season definitely helps in terms of chemistry. I would be selling us short if I say we are not going for all the trophies. We have good atmosphere, good ideas and the energy levels are high."
Tampines coach Gavin Lee added: "Many are raving about Joel's talent and potential but we need to be careful with expectations and give him every chance to succeed.
"As for Daniel and Jordan, it is not about age. They are as good as any player in their positions in the local game and we wouldn't sign them if we didn't think they can contribute. Besides their abilities, they are great leaders to those learning the ropes.
"We want to be effective in and out of pre-season. It is not just the results, but the performance that defines who we are. If we can win and entertain with attractive football, that would be the ideal scenario."
Two-time winners Home United are also another local side to have gotten one over Albirex this season, when they beat the defending champions on penalties for the Community Shield last Saturday.
The Protectors were the best local side last season, finishing league runners-up and winning the AFC Cup Asean zonal final. Like Tampines, they have retained 17 of 24 players, including South Korean lynchpin Song Ui-young and the evergreen Shahril Ishak who combined for 40 goals in all competitions last term.
They also boast of arguably the league's best local Under-23 trio in forward Adam Swandi, central midfielder Hami Syahin and central defender Taufiq Muqminin.
With their last major trophy coming in the form of the 2013 Singapore Cup and their last league title in 2003, Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki said it is time to end the drought.
He added: "We want to build on our successes last season and go one better. Fifteen years without a league title is too long and we will have to work hard and keep our concentration even with our AFC Cup commitments to end that wait.
"Beating Albirex on penalties is good for our confidence and it should one of the most open seasons in recent years but we won't write them off as they can only get better training full time without National Service or school commitments.
"They played with five at the back against us and we couldn't score, so it is up to us to find ways to adapt and penetrate against such teams in the future."
Meanwhile, the dark horses in the nine-team SPL have to be Hougang United, who added considerable firepower to a team that scored a league-low of just 22 goals in 24 games last season.
While they have never finished in the top half or won any major titles, the Cheetahs are gunning for history, with coach Clement Teo declaring that "third would be an underachievement".
Retaining forwards Iqbal Hussain, Shahfiq Ghani and Fazrul Nawaz, they have since signed Faris Ramli and welcomed back Croat Stipe Plazibat and captain Zulfahmi Arifin.
They initially secured the services of 2015 and 2016 top scorer Rafael Ramazotti, only for the Brazilian to go missing and sign for Mexican club FC Juarez.
Teo was positive and saw this development as a blessing in disguise as it allowed him to shore up his defence with South Korean centre-back Kong Howon.
He said: "We wanted two foreign strikers to give us more firepower, but it was also true that Afiq Yunos was our only natural centre-back.
"The Ramazotti incident allowed us to sign Kong and it was a bonus we picked up Faris, and he will give us a different dimension with his ability to take on players. Yes, we have many attackers, but this also means there is a good and healthy competition to start a game.
"With the team we assembled, we feel we need to be in the title race. Among our players, the mindset is even a draw is an underachievement."
Zulfahmi, who has returned after one season with Thailand's Chonburi, added: "Any team can win the league this season and Albirex are beatable. It depends on who are the most consistent across 24 games.
"Thanks to our chairman Bill Ng and the management, we now have quality attackers and a great team, so we got to be more adventurous and clinical than before to fight for the targets we want to achieve."

Football: Tampines Rovers score two last-gasp goals to see off Cambodia's Nagaworld FC 4-2 in AFC Cup tie
SINGAPORE - Tampines Rovers head coach Kadir Yahaya stepped into the press conference and told the media: "Let me catch my breath first."
The adrenaline was clearly still coursing through his veins as his team scored two last-gasp goals in added time to beat Nagaworld FC 4-2 in their Asian Confederation Cup (AFC) Group F match at Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday (April 17).
With the win, the Stags cemented their place at the top of the group with 10 points, three ahead of second-placed Hanoi FC who beat Yangon FC 5-2 yesterday.
Said Kadir: "We really tried to attack from the start and we could see the opponents trying to defend as much as they could, to try and break the deadlock... I think we deserved to win tonight."
Tampines took the lead in the third minute when Zehrudin Mehmedovic slid a defence-splitting pass to Irwan Shah, who made no mistake with a clinical finish.
But the Cambodian team pulled level in the 14th minute through midfielder Kouch Dani.
The home team thought they had the win in the bag when Yasir Hanapi scored with a half volley in the 87th minute, but Nagaworld equalised again through Omogba Esoh on the stroke of full-time.
Â
There was still time for some late drama, though, as Tampines striker Khairul Amri sent the 1,283 spectators into delirium with a superb overhead kick in the 91st minute.
Jordan Webb then made sure of the three points with the final goal just seconds before the final whistle.
Describing the final 10 minutes as "unbelievable", Kadir added: "It's good for the fans on both sides but, from a coach's point of view, I was quite angry with the goals we conceded.
"After we scored a goal, we lost concentration and this is our main problem that we have to address."
The Stags next play Yangon FC at Jalan Besar Stadium on May 1, before their last group match away to Hanoi FC on May 15.
Kadir added: "We need to be more clinical in front of goal. If we progress, we're going to expect much better teams and much better defence."

Football: Chelsea target Pulisic not for sale in January, say Dortmund
BERLIN (AFP) - Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund have insisted Chelsea-target Christian Pulisic will not be allowed to leave in the January transfer window.
According to British media reports, Chelsea are interested in the 20-year-old US international, but Dortmund, who want €50 million (S$78 million) for the right winger, have blocked a possible departure next month.
"We won't let any important players go who are indispensable to achieving our sporting goals," director of sport Michael Zorc told Sport Bild magazine with Dortmund seven points clear in the league table.
"I strongly assume that Christian will still be wearing the Borussia Dortmund shirt in February."
Head coach Lucien Favre often prefers England international Jadon Sancho on the right wing, leaving Pulisic, who has also been linked to Liverpool, to start just four of Dortmund's 14 Bundesliga games so far this season.
However, the fleet-footed American has started four of Dortmund's six Champions League group stage games including Tuesday's 2-0 win at Monaco when Raphael Guerreiro scored both goals to put the Germans in Monday's draw for the last 16.
Germany midfielder Julien Weigl, linked to both Arsenal and Roma, is another big-name player struggling for game time who has been told he is going nowhere.
The 23-year-old has been relegated to the Dortmund bench following the arrival of Belgium's World Cup star Axel Witsel.
It also looks as though Japan international Shinji Kagawa also has no future at Dortmund as the attacking midfielder failed to make the 18-man squad for Monaco, despite seven players being ruled out.

Three months after Sala's death, dad dies
PARIS • The father of Emiliano Sala, Horacio, has died at the age of 58 following a heart attack, the mayor of the village where he lived in Argentina's Santa Fe province said yesterday. His sudden death comes just three months after his son, Argentina striker Emiliano, was killed when the aircraft he was travelling in went down in the English Channel.
"Horacio's wife called me at five o'clock in the morning. The doctors were already there. When he left his home, he had already died," Progreso mayor Julio Mueller said. "He never managed to get over the death of Emi. We thought that after the discovery (of Sala's body) he would be able to close that circle."
Emiliano, 28, was on his way to Cardiff City after the English Premier League side had signed him for a club-record £15 million (S$26.4 million) from French Ligue 1 club Nantes.
The pilot of the aircraft he was in, David Ibbotson, also went missing in the Jan 21 tragedy in which the Piper Malibu crashed in the waters north of Guernsey. Sala's body was later recovered on Feb 6 after an extensive search, but Ibbotson, 59, is yet to be found.
In a statement, Cardiff said the club offered its "deepest condolences" to Horacio's friends and family. "They are very much in the thoughts of us all at this difficult time," a spokesman said, as reported by the BBC.

Most of it is simply a matter of filling out the paperwork correctly and approaching things in the right order. Football: Sevilla leave it late to snatch draw against Leganes
MADRID (AFP) - Sevilla lost ground at the top of La Liga on Sunday (Dec 23) despite Wissam Ben Yedder’s late equaliser rescuing them a point against struggling Leganes.Â
Mikel Vesga’s header looked set to earn Leganes a valuable victory in their fight against relegation but Yedder sneaked in to score in the 91st minute and earn Sevilla a 1-1 draw.Â
The visitors were the ones celebrating at the final whistle but they head into the winter break two points behind Atletico Madrid and five adrift of leaders Barcelona.Â
Sevilla had to play the second half with 10 men after Franco Vazquez was sent off during half-time for dissent. “The team has demonstrated its fight,†coach Pablo Machin said.
“Wissam just has that instinct around goal – I don’t know if it feels like a victory, but it shows the team has soul and courage.â€
Leganes could have wrapped up the win as they twice hit the woodwork, the second time just moments before Ben Yedder equalised at the other end. But they have now won two and drawn three of their last five games, an encouraging run that has put four points between them and the relegation places.Â
Sevilla had been top almost exactly a month ago and even if few would see Machin’s side as genuine title challengers, this was a match they would have hoped to win.Â
Key absentees like Ever Banega and Pablo Sarabia were missed while a rain-soaked Butarque made playing conditions difficult. Leganes were ahead after five minutes as Vesga rose high to meet Allan Nyom’s chipped ball into the area, and flicked it into the corner.Â
Twice they were denied a second by the woodwork, each time from headers, as Dimitrios Siovas and then Youssef En-Nesyri watched efforts crash against the crossbar.Â
Roque Mesa had nodded onto the post as well for 10-man Sevilla and it was his cross that supplied the equaliser in the first minute of added time. Yedder nipped in at the back post and, completely unmarked, made no mistake.Â
There was late drama earlier on Sunday too as Cristiano Piccini scored a 94th-minute winner for Valencia against Huesca. Huesca, who are bottom of the table, had pulled level after Juan Hernandez’s penalty cancelled out Dani Parejo’s opener at Mestalla. Piccini’s goal moves Valencia up to eighth.

Mourinho blames player power, wants top coaching job
Mourinho blames player power, wants top coaching job
LONDON • Jose Mourinho has bemoaned the power wielded by modern players and suggested that clubs ought to be structured to empower managers to deal with it.
Speaking to beIN Sports where he was appearing as an analyst, the former Manchester United manager said: "The phrase I kept with me was when Sir Alex (Ferguson) told me, 'The day a player is more important than the club, goodbye'.
"The manager is there to coach them. Not to keep discipline at any cost."
Mourinho joined United in May 2016 and was sacked last month after a 3-1 defeat by Premier League leaders Liverpool.
During his tenure, the club won the League Cup and the Europa League, but they made a slow start to this season as the manager fell out with a number of their star players, notably Paul Pogba.
Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge until the end of the season, the club have won six games in a row and are now six points off the top four in the Premier League.
Pogba has been instrumental in midfield in that run, while attackers such as Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have also been playing with a freedom not afforded to them by their former coach.
Mourinho, 55, is understood to have a non-disclosure agreement with the club, which prevents him from discussing the specific circumstances of his departure. But his words will be interpreted by many as a swipe at the United players with whom he clashed.
"In modern football, there is a problem between the coach and the player," he added.
"We are not in a time any more where the coach, by himself, is powerful enough to cope and to have a relationship of education and sometimes confrontation with players who are not the best professionals.
"A club must be very well organised to cope with these kind of situations, where the manager is only the manager and not the man who is trying to keep the discipline or educate the players.
"The structure must be there to protect the manager and for the players to feel that they are not going to arrive into a situation where they feel more powerful than they used to be."
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Porto manager ruled himself out of the running for the Benfica job last week but confirmed that he intended to continue managing at a "top level".
"I am too young (to retire). I am in football for a long, long time, but I will be 56 in a couple of weeks and am really too young," he said.
"I want to coach. I belong to top-level football and that is where I am going to be."

Football: Impressive Lyon plunge Thierry Henry's Monaco deeper into crisis
PARIS (AFP) - Lyon dominated struggling Monaco from beginning to end on Sunday (Dec 16) to climb back into the Ligue 1 top three and bury Thierry Henry's side deeper in the relegation zone.
Lyon kept pace with Lille, who won 3-2 at Nimes earlier despite playing much of the match with 10 men.
Lille are three points ahead of Lyon, who have a game in hand, and five ahead of Montpellier, who did not play for a second consecutive week, and have played two fewer matches.
The French title race is all but over with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain 10 points clear, but a young Lille side are eyeing a return to the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2012, while Lyon, who squeaked into the last 16 in Europe in midweek, are seeking to ensure they will be back next year.
"This match was one of our most dominant performances in the league," said Lyon coach Bruno Genesio. "Even with superiority, we continued to play simply, to work for each other." Lyon took the lead in only the sixth minute with a goal by Houssem Aouar, his sixth of the season.
Nabil Fekir added the second in the 34th minute. Kenny Tete shrugged off a timid challenge to pull back a low cross which Fekir attacked while Monaco's Jemerson hesitated.
Monaco managed only one shot all game. They played almost the whole second half with 10 men after Aleksandr Golovin raked his studs down the back of Fekir's calf in the 47th minute and was sent off.
Ferland Mendy added a deserved third for Lyon just before the hour mark.
"The match in Kiev on Wednesday made us realise that we had a strong group," said Genesio. "And that we had to stop the childish attitudes that we have seen on some matches."
Monaco, the only team in the bottom half of the French league table to play this weekend, meekly wasted a chance to gain ground on their rivals.
"We have to look at the first goal we conceded and especially the second goal which summed up this game," Henry said. "Winning without desire is hard.
"We have to try to put this game behind us, we have a big game against Guingamp next week."
Earlier, in-form striker Nicolas Pepe scored what proved to be the winner as 10-man Lille won at Nimes.
"What a match, I'm really proud of my players," said Lille coach Christophe Galtier. "We must not forget that we played for more than an hour and 20 minutes with 10 men.
"With the added time, it was a very long and hard match physically." Portuguese teenager Rafael Leao headed Lille into a fourth-minute lead, but Galtier's men suffered a setback when former Southampton centre-back Jose Fonte was sent off in the 16th minute.
Jonathan Bamba's deflected effort doubled the advantage shortly before the interval, though, and Pepe appeared to have made the points safe midway through the second half with his 12th goal of the campaign.
"After the PSG strikers, Pepe and Bamba are the best," said Nimes coach Bernard Blaquart.
The 10 men finally started to tire late on, but Lille held on for victory despite Nimes goals from Rachid Alioui and Clement Depres.
